Logic Puzzles

Postby Doggiegal » Sun Aug 14, 2005 8:40 pm

:hello:

I have a book with a puzzle for every day of the year, so I'm going to try to post one a day...

Today, August 14:

Each of the following words contains AUG. Fill in the words.

How we tell the world--and the official--he's on the job: _ _ A U G _ _ _ _ _
A female offsping: _ A U G _ _ _ _
Unduly proud, rude to the point of arrogance: _ A U G _ _ _
Was visibly and probably audibly amused: _ A U G _ _ _

Guess away! :peace:

August 15:

The following 'box' will remind you of the weather (at least in the northern hemisphere). Fill in the letters HEAT so that these four letters are in each row, across, down, and on the long diagonal, but no two letters may be the same in any line, nor may two indentical letters be next to each other. One line is filled in to get you started.

H _ _ _
_ E _ _
_ _ A _
_ _ _ T

HATE
TEHA
ETAH
AHET

Is that what you're looking for? The four letters are in each row, across, down, and on the long diagonal(s), and no two letters are in the same line. However having no two identical letters "next" to each other is slightly vague. None touch each other horizontally or vertically, but a few touch each other diagonally...

Also on a side note, it appears HTML doesn't really work on this board like it says, at least not the code to create a table.

Well show us the answer the book has and maybe I'll see where I went wrong.

Ah the properties of a symetrical square. I believe that's exactly what I have just flipped diagonally.

August 16:

Our hero, the brave knight, is trying to rescue the beautiful Princess of Puzzleland. The maiden has slipped him a message. She will be able to stand at the stable gate from 12:30 to 12:40--but no more than those ten minutes--on the following day. If he arrives promptly, she will escape with him. If not, she will be married later that same evening to his hated rival. The castle is 12 miles away. The first third is uphill, and his horse can make 4 miles per hour uphill; the second third is level, at 8 miles per hour, and the last part, one-third, is downhill, at 12 miles per hour. He figures that that averages out to 8 miles per hour, so if he leaves at 10:55, to give himself five minutes' leeway, he should arrive exactly within the 10 minutes. Of course, he can't get there too early, or he'll be caught hanging around. Does he make it in time? Why or why not?

Well that's a depressing problem, he arrives 5 minutes late, and the Princess is forced to marry the Knight's rival.

Explination

However, one might argue that calculation is at least slightly off for the lack of consideration to acceleration rates... but I have the feeling the author isn't looking for something that in depth.
