Second Life on XP SP2

Postby TheAppleFreak » Mon Mar 17, 2008 4:45 pm

Yesterdaty, I downloaded the Second Life client for Windows XP with SP2. The computer has a Pentium 4 processor and it works... slowly. The computer has a processor speed of 1.83 Ghz, and I want to know how I can speed up the client's performance without performing surgery on my laptop.

If you do not know about the Second Life client, please click here to check it out.

Really, the only way's i can think of to speed up a compuer are:
1) use windows utilites to defrag, desk clean, and dskchk
2) open up your computer and install more ram, another proccesor, or something else
3) Reformat your computer. This WORKS! My 3 yr old computer that took 5 minutes to load ie now takes 5 seconds. Windows collects alot of junk over time. This is though a last ditch effort.

hope this helps

Well, it could be a good alternative to erase...
But I won't do it. The laptop actually belongs to my mother, and I don't think she wants all of her books deleted...

try defrag, dskchk, and disk clean. You could also try putting all of your stuff except second life on a seperate hard drive.

Also try autoruns. Play around with the things that start when your computer starts, but don't unckeck anything made by microsoft, because its probably required to run. Monitor the task manager, and see if there is a program eating up proccesor speed. Download CCleaner

And if you want to reformat, you would back up everything. Just beg your mom that you know what your doing and you'll make her computer faster. Just don't screw up. You might find programs you'll never use, and get rid of the junk windows collects over time. This is though a last resort, something you'll only do once or twice a year.

I agree with everything said so far, when you run it, exit any unnesseccary programs so they don't slow down your computer. Also try decreasing the graphics quality in the settings while playing the game. Try to back up your files to another hard drive reformat the first drive to sata, if posible, then move it back, then do a clean up, defrag and check disk to finish the deal, the results are amazing, I have a pent. 4 as well with 2.8 GHz and it can keep up even before reformating, I'm about to do it now, and should "fly" through programs when I'm done.

you might also want to download and install Wopti Utilities and use it's optimization features to speed up your computer.
