Is this humiliation?

Postby Malkmusian » Thu Apr 24, 2008 10:05 pm

On a forum I go to (Pink Milk and Munchies), as punishment for spamming, our root admin renamed a fellow administrator EMO Lammy, put her post count at -2, and banned her from the forum except for one forum, in which he thought she would rant.

Well, it's about to crack. I'm having a discussion with this banned user on the Shoutbox (she was recently unbanned from it) and she and I want to reason to Taylor that this is cruel and unusual punishment according to the Bill of Rights.

Is this, in anyway, a bad form of humiliation?

^^; ...You do know that "cruel and unusual punishment" really more refers to torture, drawn and quartering, beheading, hanging, lynching and other various pain-inflicting punishments in regards to actual crimes? Yes? *sweatdrops*

While that does seem a tad harsh so far as forum banishments go (however, considering I have no idea what this girl did, I'm only working off of one side of the story), there is absolutely no way you're going to be able to use the Bill of Rights to help you here.

After all, the root Admin is also protected by that same Bill of Rights. ^^; Freedom of Speech and whatnot.

What I would suggest is that you contact this admin and calmly explain to him that you feel the punishment is unfair (don't use cruel or unusual or quote the Bill of Rights, because that's just not going to work here) and why you feel she deserves a second chance. Again, I have no idea what this girl did in the first place, so in the ignorance of knowing whether or not she deserved to be banned, so I don't have any clue as to whether pleading her case will work or not.

Well, I suppose it all has to do with the admin who's leading the forum, really...

However, I think that was very immature, and is maybe soaking it up a little more... I mean, come on, EMO? oh yeah, that'll really fix her lil' ole wagon...
However, an admin shouldn't be spamming in the first place. That also denotes a sense of irresponsibility, and one wonders why this perosn was made an admin in the first place. In which case, these poeple might have a connection other than being colleauges on a site, and the problem could be there.

And I remind you, the bill of rights does not really apply to the internet. If they don't want to deal with it, then get off the site. Dwtlling on it won't make anything any better. It's not cruel and unusual, it's immature and stupid. But the sad part is that they're so obviously groveling in it... And you DO sign a legal and binding contract to follow rules set by administrators, and spamming is usually one of them. And the punishment is completely up to the person with the power to deal it out. (But seriosuly... didn't we all go through this in elementary chool? Don't tell me someone let someone under 13 run a forum...)

But I do warn you, this thinkg REEKS of a personal argument. If you want to do anything, let these two solve it, and these two ALONE. Too much interference will only cause an incorrect result to occur, and could harm a lot more than you think. Just be careful...

Since I agree with what's been said, I'm not going to rehash it, something I have to wonder is the prudence of the capability of the head Administrator to change Usernames, a power that can't possibly be used for anything but immaturity.

Actually, no, it does have a useful function beyond personal vendettas. ^^

The "responsible" use for it, is, in the event that a new member (or even an established member) gives themselves a username that is either insulting, rude, or just generally uncalled for (ie, swearing, hurtful names, etc.), then the Admins can change it without having to co-erce the member into changing it themselves.

It makes for a much speedier clean-up, and it keeps the forum free of usernames with offensive words or names in them. *nods*

I will admit though that there are probably far more instances of that power being abused than used properly in the world of forums. ^^;;;

Greetings Lyoko Freak, this is Jammer Lammy, an administrator from Pink Milk And Munchies.
I know this topic is old, but to clear things, I wasn't spamming, the head administrator of Pink Milk And Munchies banned me from the site because something personal had happened to me irl and I was explaining what was going on and why I probably wasn't going to be on Pink Milk And Munchies for a few days, so then the head admin just started bsing like crazy (I'm not gonna tell what else happened, lets just say things were a mess there). Now, don't start thinking I'm a bad admin or that the head admin is a bad admin, the head admin sometimes has a really bad day on the forums but he's actually a great admin. So am I (most of the time).

Answer: Ummm...no.

Admins should know better than to spam; what for being responsible for telling off other users who do it and all. It's like how some stupid cops shouldn't get away with the "he works for the government" excuse. That doesn't make it any better, it just makes it worse. Cops should know better; THEY'RE COPS. If "ignorance of the law" is their excuse, they don't need to be cops!

It's the same with a site admin. You know the rules; if you don't, you shouldn't be an admin.

I think that's a little overboard. I mean, although is spaming is very bad, but the punishment is really too heavy, seriously.
