This episode actually did VERY little on the series, in terms of backstory, as well.
He probably wanted to keep them out of the garden shed because of all the sharp and dangerous tools in there. He wouldn't want them to accidentally get hurt by one of them, now would he?

That's true, but he didn't have to ground the both of them and tell them to "beat it". That was very excessive punishment.
