Is new season going the way you thought it would?

Postby weezlcheez » Fri Nov 23, 2007 4:18 pm

I have been watching this new season and while I have enjoyed it, it is not at all going the way I thought it would.

It seems to me the writers have completely forgotten the things they set up at the end of season 4. Then, Yumi could not miss another class or she would be expelled. Ulrich's father was going to pull him out of Kadic because he was flunking out and his dad thought it was a waste of money. Odd had alienated every girl at the school and couldn't buy himself a date with one of them. They needed new member's because they couldn't put in all the time needed to fight Xana. And, maybe the biggest thing, Lyoko had been destoyed (yeah, I know they built a new one. Pretty lame if you ask me) These were some pretty big issues to just write off.

Somethings about the new season are pretty cool. I like the idea that they have had to fight Xana's monsters in the real world. I kind of think it has been a bit of a cop out that it always happens in some remote location but the potential is there for big things. I also like that other people have been involved in their fights. The one where Sissi, Jim, Tamiya, Millie etc were involved was a classic. But, then we returned to the past. Back to the status quo.

Any thoughts on this?

*glances around*

<s>It's the Aliens.</s> Yeah, your right, there was a lot of potential for episodes and situations that were neglected. I swear, they shoulda went like Digimon: Digital Monsters. At the beginning of the first season, it was all a secret. Then, the Digimon came back home with them in the latter seasons, and by the end the entire world was involved in the conflict. Not <i>that</i> woulda been a cool out for Code: Lyoko Season 4.

But, Kamekai, if they did go like Digimon, there would be spinoff after spinoff after spinoff!

I say, it has to replicate Seasons 1 and 2 to an extent. Those are the better ones.

Too true, too true. However, Kamekai has a point. There was gradual plot progression, rather than plot "Jumps."

Though there were too many spinoffs of Digimon.

Let's just be glad that Moonscoop was smart enough to cut it off while it was still hot.

You don't want to get something when it's hot.

Look at the Shaggs. Their dad got them when they were hot. Now, their music is still considered the worst music to be put on vinyl. It even beat Trout Mask Replica (it has very listenable songs, like "Ella Guru" and "Moonlight On Vermont")

I liked Digimon when the Digital World was less digital and more world. CL is getting dangerously close to jumping the shark, IMO.

It is indeed- but so long as we have our trusty LTT team to reason things out, it's still decent for our purposes.

Episodes like "The Lake", Canine Conundrum", and "A Lack of Goodwill" were some really good episodes.

I actually love Season 4 more than any season

(Sorry to the people who disagree)

I know it's not the typical Fight XANA and Deactivate the tower thing anymore.

But I like Skid and the Replika fighting and translating into the real world keeping their Lyoko super powrers.

I mean c'mon? Super powers on Earth? Entering a replika and digital world?
We don't see that on TV everyday.

(Well, i dont)

S4 seems to have lost a lot of the magic that possessed S1 and 2. S1 and 2, there were constant threats, millions of lives in the ballance, and death and chaos all around.

Overall, the tone of the show has gotten a lot lighter ever since the warriors went on the offensive. Not to mention that XANA hasn't really been putting up a fight on ANY of his Replikas. I'm dead serious. If I was XANA, I would materialize at least four hundred monsters per Replika and have his army split up and surround the towers to kill the Skidbladnir. Or better yet, destroy the Lyoko Computer! Why not do that, eh, XANA?

XANA just seems dumber in this season.

Hey...is it just me, or did this magic sort of wind down with the introduction of the new outfits, the skid, and all the coolish graphic effects and improvements? Coincidence...probably...

My favorite parts of CL are not the battles on Lyoko. They tend to be the same thing over and over. I like the way the group interacts together and also with the other people at the school and their families. I think those dramas are what needs to be developed.

One thing they have hinted at in the last few episodes is how William and Yumi still seem to have feelings for one another. Lately they have been alone on Lyoko and during their fights they have these moment that something passes between them. Heck one time Yumi even got past Xana straight to William. Something is there I think we should explore what it is.

I also think that almost every moment that Sissi is on the screen is priceless. Whether its when she's arguing with Odd, flirting with Ulrich, pulling something underhanded or saving one of their butts these time are among the show's best. I really think we need more Sissi.

I've thought it was really strange that Xana wanted to distroy Lyoko for three seasons and then after he did just that he went out and built replicas of it all over the place. I must admit when they said that Xana had escaped to the internet that meant that they would be fighting him on a whole new battle ground. And, I guess they are when they fight him in the skid but its still just shooting monsters.

Spread too thin, perhaps? There were supposed to be hundreds of Replika's, right?

Not really. There's too much filler and still, the gang is very unsure about rookies thanks to hot head William, who is being used like an ashtray heart by XANA.

Well, to be fair, the Digimon Anime in all variations were created solely to sell small virtual pet toy things, it was ridiculously easy to create other nearly unrelated, but still pretty decent series because of that.

Meanwhile, the Lyoko Warriors and Aelita's backstory are pretty much required for Code Lyoko to actually be Code Lyoko.

I had hoped, orriginally, S4 would be like S2: the underlying story arc would duo with having interesting character development per episode, and we'd learn interesting things and see people in a new light, as well as just get entertained by some cool fights.

I think I covered a lot of what I think went wrong over in the "How would you have written Lyoko" topic, but suffice to say, what got lost here was the characters in a flood of action on screen. Sometimes this is ok. You want to have about 5 episode a season that are replika attacks with like 10 seconds of framework and 23:50 minutes of action? Awesome, I loved the traditionally animated fighting some. However, you also need the episodes that are like 12 minutes of development on characters to 12 minutes of actual Lyoko work. Lots of bad situations to fight out of or other people getting involved with a XANA attack that could have been done. Speaking ofother people, I wanted more 'The Lake' kind of William moments from this season. I have no problem with him being XANA's black knight, but you can't just forget he's in there somewhere 99% of the time and show it once and have us belive a pattern.

Oh well, season 4 was kind of dissapointing, and I feel it's better they end it now that go on to another lackluster one like this. Wouldn't hurt my feelings if we got a few incidental episode on backstory and origin, maybe something to wrap up the shipping more convincingly, but thats OAV kind of material, not another season.
