Not really... it's childhood knowledge already for me. x.x

Pencak Silat is a native Indonesian martial arts that has hundreds of different styles spread throughout the entire Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Brunei, Singapore). It's primarily used more as health exercise as well as a traditional dance routine but it's also a competition sport that's widely within Southeast Asia (there's tournaments and everything).

Apparently Southeast Asian martial arts became prominent in Europe (yes, France included), which includes Pencak Silat and other martial arts (Kali Silat, Eskrima, Arnis, etc.).

Yeah... that's my general childhood knowledge there...LOL. x.x

In the City right beside the city where I live, there is actually a Place that specializes in teaching Pencak Silat. Next time I am near there, if I have a chance, I will take a couple pictures.

Not me, but I have heard of Pencak Silat, it is not a very well known MA, its not as recognized as say Karate, Kung Fu, or Tae Kwon Do those are probably the most recognized forms of MA, that is what my instructor told me... Before I was injured I was going to start my black belt training, but I completely severed my achillies tendon and I was unable to go for my black belt...

Some of the throws you see in the episodes are actually a mixture of other MA, or very similar to other MAs, you should check out Caporiea... I will let you know if I find any pics...

The reason why Southeast Asian martial arts (Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, East Timor) are not as well-known as East Asian martial arts (China, Japan, Korea) is because most of Southeast Asia were colonized by Europeans (Netherlands (Indonesia--- East Timor used to be part of Indonesia), Spain & U.S. (Philippines), and England (Malaysia--- Brunei and Singapore used to be part of Malaysia)) for many centuries and during colonization these indigenous martial arts were banned. It wasn't until all three countries were finally independent from these colonizers that their indigenous martial arts started to emerge again. Until now they still try to gain recognition through their own countries as well as other countries outside of Southeast Asia.

Pencak Silat is usually being executed with traditional chant-like music as accompaniment (I'm not sure if Malaysian style also has music with it but Filipino-style Pencak Silat is absolute silence, no music accompaniment), even when two people are sparring. There's some clips of it in YouTube. Interesting stuff. :)

Awesome! Let's not forget, it also became popular in France and Spain too, as well as the Netherlands.

My parents (though my dad trained longer) did train in Pencak Silat when they were in high school. It was a compulsory phys ed class for them back in the Philippines in their town. I didn't get a chance to train in it but one day, hopefully, I will. x.x

I went to the Philippines last month. And ironically, these kids outside where I was staying were doing Silat. I was impressed, they were very good. I've went to a Silat class when I was 14 for about 1 month, but that was like 4 years ago. I didnt have the patience to practice. I wish I did though.

If PERSILAT is making an effort to make the art world-famous, why haven't Tekken and/or Virtua Fighter introduced a fighter skilled in this art? :cussout: Jean Kujo's karate style is pointless and dull.

Because it's not world-famous yet. If it was, they probably would.

I agree. I wish VF or Tekken dis recognize this graceful art, though, because it's practiced in the States now..

True.
And plus that, they should have a fighting game with Silat that doesn't include the distracting blood and gore flying around making it Rated M.
So then everyone can buy it and learn about Silat.

Did anyone know that they have a Pencak Silat game at Miniclip? Taelia, you might enjoy it.

It's not like a video game for the PS2 and whatnot.
It's just a flash game, but its the closest thing to a Silat game I can find.

Before my old friend, Danny died, I saw him playing a sequel to that Silat game I was talking about. I wish he was still alive to tell me or at least the title so I can find it.. :(
