Aelita's Humanity: Planned or Improvised?

General original series discussion (Seasons 1-4)

Moderators: The Administrators, Moderators

Do you think Aelita being human was planned from the beginning, or just made up in Season 2?

Aelita's Humanity: Planned or Improvised?

Postby SearchingLyoko » Sat Oct 31, 2009 2:21 am

Well, the title says it all.

In the beginning, Season 1, we were all led to believe that Aelita was just some virtual being stuck in some virtual world.

However, a little-ways into Season 2, we discovered that Aelita was actually a human virtualized into Lyoko! And the rest, my friends, is history...

My question is, in your opinion, do you think that MoonScoop planned Aelita being human all along, or do you think they just improvised that twist in Season 2 to continue the plot?

I personally.. have no idea. I want to see your insights.

Hrm...

Remember that CL was originally commissioned for just one series, and within that the 'nature' of Aelita was never explored much beyond being presumed an AI. It's entirely possible that little thought went into 'what' she was (let us not forget the red herring that was Taelia). Alternatively, they could have been waiting to see what the audience reaction was to Aelita before they planned out her origin in detail.

However, I suspect Sophie and Jerome already had plans, because when Season 2 was commissioned they very quickly wrote out 'the gameplan' for the rest of the series and the back-story (Project Carthage, Waldo Schaeffer, et al)

Though I know quite a bit of the design process that goes into making these kinds of shows, I'm speaking from a writer's standpoint.

The sad truth is writers aren't the most diligent people on the planet. Unless they are dedicated, they write up to want they need to write. I wish that Aelita being human was part of the plan, but since they were originally contracted for one season, I don't know.

This topic made me think about this. Aelita's humanity may have been a plot twist, but a good one that allowed much of the series to be possible.
Fictional Conversation after the Episode "Routine:

Ulrich - "You couldn't wait, could you?"
Jeremy - "What are you talking about?"
*Ulrich grabs and lifts Jeremy by his collar.
Ulrich - "I was this close to tasting her porcelain lips. We weren't in any danger, but noooo! You had to return to the past anyway!"
*Jeremy sniffles as Aelita appears on screen and rolls her eyes
Aelita - Ulrich, put him down.

It's definately an interesting question...

Because, honestly, that would mean that Aelita was, as of Season 1, not human.

It's interesting to see this evolve.

And, while, yes, this WAS originally commisioned for one Season, remember that even though only a certain part may be released, much more might be intended.

Like, for instance, Antea Hopper. We have no idea what happened to her. Even so, it's likely that those working on the show definately have some idea of what happened, even though they haven't told us (And even though the novels are "technically" going to explain, it's unlikely that the original ideas thought of by the writers were told to the book's author.)

So.. on one hand, since it was supposed to be one season, it's possible that she was originally intended to be AI. On the other, since everone likes to have their own little theories in their head, it's entirely possible that the writer's originally thought of her as human.
