The origins of the name XANA finally found?

Postby SearchingLyoko » Sun Jan 10, 2010 11:10 pm

While flipping through my Latin book, I discovered something interesting in the Punic Wars Section....

From Wikipedia:

"XANTHIPPUS OF CARTHAGE:

Xanthippus (Gr. Ξάνθιππος) was a Greek (possibly Spartan) mercenary general hired by the Carthaginians to aid in their war against the Romans during the First Punic War. He trained Carthaginian soldiers and led them into the battle of Tunis, where Carthaginian forces routed the Roman expeditionary force and captured the Roman consul Marcus Atilius Regulus in 255 BC.

Xanthippus is credited with the Carthaginian formation, cavalry split between the two wings, mercenary infantry on their right, with a hastily raised phalanx of civilians in the centre and a line of elephants in front of the infantry, which defeated the Romans formed in their normal formation, with the outnumbered cavalry on the wings and legionary infantry in the centre. He also realised the mistakes the Carthaginians were making by avoiding open ground (because of the Romans' superior infantry) which restricted the Carthaginian cavalry and elephants (the strongest parts of their armies).

Diodorus gives an account of Xanthippus' death. After the battle of Tunis, Xanthippus stopped in the city of Lilybaeum which was besieged by the Romans. He inspired courage and led an attack defeating the Romans. Jealous of Xanthippus' success the city betrayed him by giving him a leaky ship and he supposedly sank in the Adriatic Sea on his voyage home."

So... a general named Xanthippus aiding Carthage in the Punic Wars....

If this is a coincidence... it's a pretty big one.

As far as I know, Moonscoop never has and probably never well explain where XANA's name came from.

But that is one helluva coincidence.

Your right, but considering the Punic-War terminology used frequently in this, I would say this is the most likely candidate for the inspiration of XANA, even if only subconciously.

Well, wait. Let's look at this story-wise. Franz Hopper created XANA to destroy Project Carthage. Why would he name XANA for someone who aided Carthage?

We could go with the theory that the writers makingthe story so Franz was using it to destroy Project Carthage was developed AFTER the name XANA was already installed.

Plus, it doesn't have to be related. When studying about Carthage for CL, the creators could have read Xanthippus and this could have subconciously sparked inspiration for Carthage.

I think "Xana" was more inspired by the notion of "Xanadu", a paradise (and Lyoko's original name), at least in the beginning, with the notion of Lyoko as a warped paradise. But with all the Carthage imagery later on, that IS a big coincidence! The one thing that confuses me is that he was on the side of the Carthagenians...while he did live in Carthage, he was also made to destroy Project Carthage...huh.

And now that that's done with, what exactly is a Lyoko? It's not really Japanese because of the L-sound...the corresponding phonetics, "Ryo", has about a thousand million meanings from what I've gathered depending on how it's written, from "second" to "domain" to "hunting" (all of which fit) and the -ko suffix means "child". Also, the word "Lyökö" has something to do with hitting in Finnish. But I bet that's another coincidence.

Probably inspired from a name.

And yes... XANA was Definately derived from Xanadu. But where was Xanadu derived from.

Don't ask questions, Carth.

Sometimes, there are questions that just shouldn't be asked.

Questions with answers that people... can't comprehend.

Ancient Mongolian folktales, I think. Or Samuel Coolridge. Not sure.

"In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure-dome decree:
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
Through caverns measureless to man
Down to a sunless sea."
-Samuel Coolridge

I'm not sure if Coolridge made the term up or if there is a story of Kubla Khan and Xanadu

I like to be contradictory too.

They should have a big Q & A section as part of CL: Reloaded.

Now here is some interesting information:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Xanadu

And there's a Xanadu, Utah apparently.
______________

Hm... so maybe this is where the creators of CL got their inspiration, this being a computer tech project.

But Xanthippus is still one heck of a coincidence.

Wow.....that is an extremely coincedental overlap of CL-related names! Good spotting.
I agree, as pointed out above by Searching, that seems likely that it was subconsciously inspired, if not the exact origin of it. And the name Skidbladnir was also inspired by a historical figure (although that may be stretching the connection on my part)
No, I am not a hardcore fan. Sorry.
And I did not make my profile pic.

As for XANA's origin, I agree with Carth about Xanadu link. And there was a movie entitled Xanadu, but I don't think that info brings anything into the discussion.
As for Lyoko... I read somewhere a long time ago it derives from a name of an island or peninsula where the factory was placed, but don't expect any proof from me.
Skidbladnir's origin is explained in the series, it was a name of a ship from Norse mythology. Google it.

Wow... I totally did not know about that location of Xanadu.

That is probably the inspiration, though you have to admit that Xanthippus is a such a huge coincidence.

As much as I wish you were right, the island that the Factory was on was ÃŽle Seguin, I think. Sorry. D:

But of course you're right about Skiddy. Aelita must have had an interesting childhood, reading nothing but mythology/history/classic literature...

I'm going to find this out someday.

Even if I have to go to France and do a repeat of what TB3 did.

She was raised in some separation from popular culture, so what should we expect? Besides, mythology is fun! I loved to read Greek one myself when I was younger.

Ile Seguin... I knew Lyoko (or Lioko) would be too easy.

Ile Siguen is very interesting.

I'm still wondering what they plan to do with that.

It's like... they demolished the Factory and then just kinda left the island to sit there.

Why demolish the Factory at all then? I would have used it to start a Code Lyoko cult or something useful like that.

Return to the past now?

But we can't. The factory's gone.

Okay, back on topic...I really am curious as to what Lyoko means. Maybe the novels will hold the answers, when they're translated...

I doubt it's latin. I'll search my books though.

My guess is either it just came to them because it sounds awesome, it was a place, person, thing, idea, or word in a language.
