Sissi's roots

Postby YDV » Wed Nov 30, 2005 1:28 am

Okay, now I -definitely- think the writers of CL are putting a lot of thought into these names. First it was Russian Aelita (aka, Aelita, Queen of Mars *cough*or Lyoko*cough*), and now it's Sissi-- Empress of Austria?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_of_Austria

I was amazed when I was searching the net for the meaning of the name Sissi and I came up with that woman, whose name is spelled Elisabeth.

Oh yeah, and while I was at it I got the meaning of some of the others.. Ulrich's name means "Wolf Ruler" (Vertigo, anyone?) and Yumi's name means "Beauty" ('nuff said.)

Also, she married a guy name Franz! I don't know if possession is the same thing as marrying, but... :P

Or how about Odd. Odd is a common Norwegian name that is derived from oddr which stands for the point of a sword. He certainly has a rapier wit. His last name Della Robia is probably named after the Florentine family of artists during the renaissance era. And given his knack for art, seems like a good fit.

Yeah, I've heard of Norwegians being named Odd. But I believe they pronounce it differently... (like Ode or something)

http://www.carla.umn.edu/lctl/VAVA/audi ... names.html

Has a list of common names from Norway, including Odd. Click on the name to hear its pronunciation. It sounds like how we pronounced Odd, except the d sound isn't as drawn out.

Hmm.. interesting. Perhaps when his parents were in Norway they got inspiration for the name-- going along with TB3's General Della Robbia description of what his father would be like.. stationed in Norway? Visiting sounds better. Why would NZ have troops stationed in Norway... (does NZ -have- troops? lol)
