Japanese references in CL

You know, I've been thinking about this for quite some time, and I think I like the references to Japanese things in CL. But there's one question: why did they do it in the first place?

We already kind of have a thread for this topic. The Very Very Freaky thread talks about Japanese references such as Yumi's Totoro plushie and Mr. Delmas' similarities to Hayao Miyazaki, among other things.
