Code Lyoko: Influenced by Neon Genesis Evangelion?

Postby Movie-Man » Sat Mar 18, 2006 8:56 pm

Does anyone think that Code Lyoko might've possibly been influenced by Neon Genesis Evangelion? The two shows are sort of similar.

Couldn't this go in CL Discussion? And I do not see the blatat similarities other than you have young kids (12-14 yrs. old) fighting an evil far more powerful than they are. Eva has so much religious subject matter in it, whereas CL doesn't touch on it. The CL fighters go to another world to fight, while the Anglels are fought on Earth. Of course, you could say Eva has influenced most any animated show since it came out, but what do yuo see that makes you compare the two?

I don't see how Evangelion influenced Code Lyoko at all... I'm interested in why you think so, though.

No - Ulrich has backbone and self-resolve. He fights because he thinks it's the right thing to do. Shinji is described as having so little self-worth he can't even take his own life, and only pilots the Eva because he was told to, same with playing his cello.

Well, not only that, but he pilots for affection and praise from others, mainly his dad. We do not have much parental conflict in CL to deal with, so motivations are different for fighting.

If anything, Sissi and Asuka are similar. They can be loud, annoying, and beautiful and not ashamed to flaunt it, but they are both insecure on the inside and hate their shortcomings.

I don't think Code Lyoko was influenced by Evangelion. I think the characters involved and the themes touched upon are too archetypal and broad for the similarities to be considered more than coincidental.

Hello, and welcome to Lyoko Freak. PErhaps you should go make a Newbie thread, make your presence known. Hope you have fun here, at any rate, and I agree with you mostly.

The Ulrich/Shinji comparision was just a really bad joke that you would only get if you followed my audio productions. My friend Fallen399 plays a killer Shinji Ikari during my mini Eva plays. When it came to casting for Ulrich's voice in "Secluded Allegro" I asked Fallen399 to play the role. Unfortunately he does not watch CL at due to time constraints so I told him to approach the role as a "More vibrant/cheerful version of Shinji Ikari." Ironically, he NAILED his lines and people called him "Ulrich incarnated."

I totally agree with you. I'm not sure that there are any real similarities between the shows.

It's just that, to me I see Code Lyoko as a lighter version of Evangelion and some characters do act like the Evangelion characters like Aelita, she seems shy like Shinji.

If anything...I'd say Code Lyoko (at least season 1 in any case) is alot closer to .Hack//Sign than "Evangelion". .Hack//Sign also has a virtual world in which characters gain fantastic forms and weapons when they log in, and there's also something going wrong with that World that's having effects in the Real World. Plus, there's also a sub-plot of friends banding together to free a character who's been imprisoned in the World. There are monsters in DotHack that strongly resemble CL ones (the Guardians...which have the same name and look almost exactly the same in both shows), and if you look at the way a character "logs in" to the World in .Hack//Sign, and the way the CL characters "scan into" Lyoko...you'll notice they both use a very similar "materialization ring" imagery. ;)

Mewberies is right, Lyoko seems to be more closely related to .hack than Neon Genesis Evangelion. You could possibly draw parallels between the characters of Evangelion and Lyoko but in the end you can do that with almost any show. But when you compare settings and plots Evangelion and Lyoko seem to be more closely related.

Interestingly I was flicking through a copy of 'Animation Insider' the other day and was a bit surprised to find a picture of Aelita in the 'Question/Answer' section - the person was asking if CL was a cheap rip-off of Hack//Sign - the reply was that both shows tie into imagery of combat in virtual realities which dates back to the movie Tron.

What surprised me was that the person replying then went on to point out the connections to the movie 'Aelita, Queen of Mars' - I think we have a closet fan here... :D

Just a tad off-topic here...which issue of Animation Insider was that? I must remember to get a copy of it. XD

Indeed though, Code Lyoko has some serious parallels with .Hack//Sign (as it does with other "computer world" shows like Reboot), but they all ultimately tie back to the mother of all "digital universes", Tron.

*snickers* That replyer probably was a fan, or at least someone who researched CL very carefully. Kudos to them! :D

Cheers Mew - sad to say I don't know which issue of Animation Insider it was - it was on a rack in a shop - I flicked through it, found Aelita (and nearly laughed myself to death at finding a CL reference) and then put it back on the shelf.
