Un Monde Sans Danger: Translation

Postby Snarky Jargon » Sat Oct 15, 2005 5:58 pm

...does this even go here? My apologies if it doesn't.

BEGIN TOPIC.

I'm a French student, so on a boring Saturday morning with no Code: LYOKO on, I go, "Oh, hey, I'll geek and translate the theme song!" Easier said than done, I suppose!

You'll notice that my chorus and such differ from the official English version--that's because I'm using http://www.paroles.net/chansons/36327.htm as the reference for my translation. I wanted a direct French->English translation instead of one made to fit the tune, sorry.

And after two hours of destroying my French-English textbook, practically screaming in frustration, and blahblahblah, I present to you a horrible translation. Some things to keep in mind: the three years of French I spent taking in middle school only amounts to one year of high school learning, so undoubtedly there will be areas that I completely fail at. Also, I tried to smooth it out as much as I could without losing the meaning--it sounds more than a little clunky when it's a literal word-for-word translation.

There is a world, virtual and different
Where each second makes fighters of us
Our only hope is to reprogram everything

[Chorus:]
We will go to save our existences,
To give it another chance to erase everything
We will go to save our existences
To remake a world without danger

Code: LYOKO, reprogram all
Code: LYOKO, a world without danger
Code: LYOKO, reprogram all
Code: LYOKO, a world without danger

In this world, everything are numbers and pixels.
We will need to be courageous in between help
But you say we might risk our lives

[Chrous]

We promise you, we will give it our all
Against the menace, and save everyone

[Chorus]

Haha, a lot of constructive criticism would be nice.

We think the flower on the precipice is beautiful
Because our fear make our feet stop at its edge
instead of stepping forward into the sky
like that flower.

Thank you! I did it because I was bored, and don't really like the Moonscoop adaptation too much--something really annoys me with the chorus.

Mm, I figured I might as well do my best on this because I'm stuck taking another four years of French anyway. *Sigh* And it helped that I spent two hours working on it. We haven't learned the future tense or the subjunctive yet in school, so at first glance my brain blanked out.

Out of curiosity: three years of French in high school or middle school? I took three years of French in middle school, and right now I'm taking French II, hurrrrrrrrrk.

My French leaves much to be desired, but from what I can tell you did a very nice job ^_^.

Ditto that. There's maybe a few things that you could possibly tweak to make it a more literal translation...and a few other things you could tweak to have the lyrics fit the melody, but this is really impressive! Nicely done! ^_^

Hurray for using CL as a means to practice one's French! Huzzah! :D

Moonscoop is a conglomeration of France Animation and Antefilms which is the same people who contracted the French Version. Both versions are from the same source...in a manner of speaking.

Trying to sing a literal translation is like signing the Gettysburg address in Japanese to the tune of "Row your Boat"!

Good job on the translation. I'd say the fan version circulating out there would have been different if they had seen your translation.

Mm--do you mind pointing places where you think it could be more literal? I know the chorus killed me dead along with the "nous faura..." line, heh, so I took some liberties with those. As for fitting the melody, I didn't really consider that. I just wanted a decent translation, heh.

...out of curiosity, what is the fan version? I haven't seen it around, so... *Curious*

Here's the lyrics for the other english fan version:

A World Without Danger

There is a world that is virtual and strange
But evil corrupts it and XANA is his name
Our only hope is to reprogram this world
CHORUS
Here we are going far
To save all that we love
If we give what we've got we will make it through
Here we are like a star
Shining bright on your world today
Make evil go away
Code Lyoko we will stand alone
Code Lyoko be there when you call
Code Lyoko we will stand real tall
Code Lyoko stronger after all

In this pixel world everything is bits and bytes
We must have the strength to put up a valiant fight
The time is unknown
It may last throughout our lives
REPEAT CHORUS

We took the oath to provide the maximum
Give all to the fight
There'll be victory in the end
REPEAT CHORUS

As for what I meant by being more literal, for where you put "We will go" for the chorus, the French lyrics have "On ira..." which means literally, "One will go..." (I think the "one" might be referring to Aelita, but I'm not quite sure...) However, this is just a minor nitpick. You have a really good translation that works just fine on its own, and could easily fit the theme song perfect with a few adjustments. ^_^

From what I understand, the English fan version is the lyrics to the Moonscoop adaptation of the song: see here -- http://www.moonscoop.fr/moonscoop.php?p ... ox&lang=uk

Heh, I have to disagree with the "on" comment, though. From what I understand, "on" is used for refering to a broad group of people, and is normally translated as a we, they or one. For example, you would say "On parle anglais a Estats Unis"--"One speaks English in the US" or "A la boum, on danse". You would not use it for refering to a single person--if they did, they would have replaced it with the appropriate pronoun. Or something. French songs are beyond my grasp, alas.

Thank you again! That was a surprisingly difficult song to translate. *twitch*

I have a translation that matches the rhythm of the song, if you sing it correctly:

It is a rather complicated song to translate. If you want to accurately translate something, you have to understand the original language's word structure and verb conjugation, then translate each word or phrase one by one.
