XANADU

Postby JeremyHopper » Tue Nov 22, 2005 11:18 am

Okay. I've been thinking for a while about this, and I've finally decided a really good idea. Why not try to make lyoko?

Okay, so we don't have quantum computers, externanium (or whatever) or the physics knowledge to create scanners. But, why not do what we can. Like make the actual lyoko virtual world. Hey, it's a video game.
And why not make XANA? Hey, it's AI. Already been done.

Basicly anything we can do.

Well, I will need some MAJOR help with this HUGE undertaking.
So, I need YOUR help guys!

Anybody who wants to help. You don't have to have the slightest knowledge of programming to help.
Please, anyone who wants to help in anyway they can, please post!

I'll give out a list of jobs once I have enough people to help. Then, if you want the job, just ask.

Although, anyone who CAN program PLEASE HELP! I can't do it all by myself.
And, any programming language will help.

So, if you want to help, and please, DO HELP, then say you will.
Thanks!

If anyone thinks this is a dumb idea don't flame me.

And if any of you are wondering why the thread's called XANADU, that's the codename efor the operation. ;)

Thank You! One of the jobs I need is just that. Anyone else?

BTW, here's the job list:

JOBS:

1. I need people to help manage the thread when I'm not here, kinda like a secondary managers.

2. I need some programmers, the more the better! Even anyone who wants to learn.

3. I need researchers. People who can look on the internet to find out things we'll need.

4. I need thinkers, people to think how it all will work. (this is where you would come in TB3 ;) )

5. I need designers, people to design the layout of the screen and the layout of lyoko and other stuff.

6. I need brains, people who know how things work, preferebly how computers work.

7. And finally I need testers to test out the diffrent programs. hey, I need a lot of 'em.

My job will simply be to manage the project, but I can also program.

If any of you don't want any of these jobs, then you could quit if you want, or you could think of a job for yourself and tell me.
But, if you can't think of a job, then just stick with us through all of this. That's all.
And if you wnat, anyone can do more than one job if they want.

Thanks again!

:D

P:S:.
Okay, now, the head of thinking/brains/maybe research will be TB3, that is, unless you don't want to be the head of all that TB3.

THIS POST HAS BEEN UPDATED PLEASE CHECK FOR UPDATES

I think we'll be programming in qbasic at first, so here you can download a copy.

You'll need winzip. Then, unzip it into the c drive in a folder called qbasic or something like that, and make a shortcut of the "QB.EXE" program on your desktop. It's DOS, it may not work on EVERY machine, and I think you may need windows to run it, I don't think it runs on mac or linux.

Anyway, then you can open it. The program tor un, remember, is "QB.EXE". Mouse works on most machines.
You can mess around, it's a really simple programming langaues, they didn't call it QBASIC for nothing. It really is basic.

So, to open a file, click file and then open and select the one you want. if you can't find a thing, then, right-click on your shrtcut, click properties, and in the uper part of the window click program and then type in the "working" section the full name of the folder qbasic is in. Then put all the programs you will want to check out from then on into that qbasic folder, and the open" command in qbasic will always point to that folder.

And, the names of qbasic programs always end in the file name ".BAS"

I'll be updating with new programs soon.

Well, if this ever gets off the ground, I'm willing to help. I'm a CS/Math major with some programming knowledge, though it is most concentrated in C, C++, and Java. I was also part of my schools programming team and I have familiarized myself with Visual Basic, Visual C++, HTML, MIPS, LISP, and Prolog. Though I'm not entirely sure how this thing will work exactly. After you get organized, we should have atleast a few sessions to plan everything out.

I could help with the thinking and maybe the design, though I don't know much about programming. I can help with figuring out where various meters and items will go.

C++ is a big plus! (OH MY GOSH, WHAT A HORRID PUN!)

yeah, we're definatly gonna end up programming in C++, so that helps a lot, and qbasic is just like visual basic (at least the programming) and we may need some HTML to let this go across networks.

So, current people helping:

TB3 - Head Brains/Thinker
Lyoko Addict - (Head?) Designer
animenologist - Head Programmer (do you want to be head programmer?)

If anyone wants to apply for a certain job, just ask!

P:S:.

I'm going to wait till we have a good amount of people here before we start talking about how it will work.

I have some ideas as far as the layout of the screen. But how will Lyoko be arranged? I'm guessing Carthage would be the hub, and the other regions spokes. Another thing to think about is where the towers, if even, should be placed.

Hm...I agree with TB3. A player card interface is a good idea. The objective, I don't know.

It won't really be a game. For now, just an expirement. But it could progress greatly, to what extent I can't imagine.

And good ideas guys! The layout of the towers... hmm... TB3, could explain what you mean in your description? I don't really get it.

For now, let's just start with making Lyoko (the virtual world) and it's phsyics. Then we'll make towers, then XANA, then who knows what.

I'd rather be told what to do, than to tell people what to do, so I'm probably not head programming material. Still trying to visualize how all of this will actually fit together. If its a game we're looking at, this sounds like something you could do using an RPG maker.

Okay, you can be a programmer, I guess I'll be the head programmer.

Let's not make it a game, let's make it as much like the real lyoko as possible (as far as physics let us! :trans: )

You mean like this?

If so, man, those are good directions you gave! Thanks.

If not, those are still good directions, I just don't get it.

I remember seeing a few very good closes ups of the map when I was still a frequent poster on Tv.com, maybe I can find them. Might take me a while though, so heres atleast a sample, courtesy of someguy 0830

I can do jobs 1, 3, 7, and maybe #5. You can choose which one(s) I do.
What will you remember me for?
