Okay, nothing's happening that can help the project. Does anyone know when things will start back up? 'Cause when I got here, everything has been at a standstill.

Sadly it's been that way for a while - we had a couple of group meetings and it was only then that we realised generating a virtual Lyoko will cost money - the appropriate software does NOT come cheap.

Also JeremyHopper has been absent for months and despite starting the project seemed to be among the first to give up (No offence JH, but you never even submitted that section of the desert section you said you'd nearly finished).

Trust me, both I and many others wanted this to work but can you seriously see a way of organising a group of teens and kids, thousands of miles apart, and then get them to all synchronise together in a single effort.

Do you have any suggestions?

It all depends on how much you guys want to do this...

I am game if you are...

I have submitted a sector, if anyone wants to begin "programing" feel free.

I cannot make heads or tails of c++.

Get a project leader that cares enough about the project to actually lead it?

But really, a CVS (Concurrent Version System) and a good leader is all you really need.

....and a crap load of coders.

How about yourself - you're a dedicated guy and know a helluva lot more about software and programming than I do.

Eh, I hate making excuses but I can't, at least not for the time being. Right now I am putting my time and effort into the XWC. There is still a bit of coding left and I won't be able to leave it until it is fully set up and functional at the least.

By the way, you never got back to me with that PM at TL.

TB3, you really ought to get a instant messenger. I already know a way to bypass your university firewalls if it is blocked. Although I don't see a way to get IMVU through unfortunately.

There are three kind of people:

1. Those making things happen,
2. Those watching things happen,
3. And those wondering what just happened.

If you are really sure about this project, why not make plans and talk about it in a chat room. As I see it, that might help a lot.

I want to help! Im Turbo Pascal and QBASIC expert, Delphi competent, and C/C++ not-so-bad, and I'm doing some research project for VR now.

And finally if you/we make the Lyoko, We can do an Operating System out of it, so it can work much faster.

Anyway, I think the conception of Virtual Machine shall be used. VM is a program that acts as a processor, but this processor would execute code having special abilities to run in Lyoko-like environment.

You know what else uses a virtual machine? Java. And you know what is slow as a**? Yep, Java. To save cycles you want to get to a lower level, not a higher one.

I know Java is slow as <!>(then C# is slow as <!>), but do you know what motto programmers use now?

Slow processor - buy faster
No memory - buy more

VM is very beautiful encapsulation of VR. And good VM can run very fast, eg. pure assembler one.

And if you tell me we will get to program Lyoko applications at normal processor level, I will just kill you. I mean - Our Lyoko needs some special code, now raw blocked memory references. Memory needs to be organized in other manner, and this can't be done with NPL. If we use VM, we can get faster than normal. Know why? We'll need to do many complicated stuff(on normal processor), and good VM design will allow us to do them simpler and faster.

By the way - using Windows/Linux 32-bit mode we can get access to approximately 3 GB RAM, due to limitations in address space(4 GB addressible via 32bit stuff -1 GB for kernel). I'm working on an 32bit-OS that will make able to get like 8191 GB RAM in address space(get this disk! And by price of horrible performance)

We can also use 64-bit systems. But this will require cash for hardware, cash for software(my father offered to buy me any computer equipment I like, but I'm afraid that he will kill me when I ask him for 64-bit computer). But address space will get up to 256 TB(first get THAT size disk), later up to 16 EB(haha! get disk this size!), don't know how much will the kernel take away.

Wikipedia article on Address space

My options to the final station: Virtual Machine spreaded on a cluster with our OS aboard.

Ah, discussion is slowly beginning again. Seriously, somebody needs to contact JeremieHopper some how and ask him why he hasn't been here for...a really long time. And whatever happened to the forum? It's still down and has been down for more than a month!

Hmm...I have 3dsmax, so I might be able to model some terrain at some point. I'll think about it, but I can't promise anything. As for a platform, etc, I think we're just concentrating on the terrain model for now. When we finish that, we'll decide how we'll use it.

Some of my thought on how can be this done:

-> Cluster of computers
Connected in some network. Each computer will take care of application(s), communicating with others to get data needed to proceed. Cache Reading shall be used, I mean, anything application may use will be downloaded earlier.

-> Execution parallelism

VM has to provide it by any means to prevent Matrix bullet-time. It will be quite hard to do, it'll require good work sharing between computers and Cache Reading.

-> A Frontend computer

This one(relatively weak) will take care of sharing work and processing user commands,

-> Uploading

When application is going to join other application, fight, exchange data, it's uploaded to other computer in cluster to save network connection.
