Actually computing power really isnt relevant to this although it does help. simply put, I have used 3d studio max before on my old 333mhz machine without a problem. although rendering times were horrendous at best. I remember I had tried the little spinning globe tutorial with the orbiting text and I had to let it render overnight it took so long.

Although keeping with the current context of things, even on a decent machine sporting something like a 2.8ghz P4 would probably take quite a while to render a small clip of CL. But it is entirely possible.

Well, maybe if you loaded your computer with a nice amount of memory, Lets say about 8 to 32 Gig? (Ram)

nah. its more processing power than anything. even the graphics card doesnt matter in rendering. its all about the raw processing power.

would really make no significant difference. generally when a large CG project is taken on, the studio does a "cluster render" where more than a single machine take on the same project thus essentially chopping the rendering time down to a fraction of what it would take with a single machine (all depends on how many extra macines are set up in this configuration and their individual speeds).

For example, some of the big movie CG companies like pixar usually have large data-center like complexes running in this clustering configuration.

Well overclocking the processor for that cluster of computers might just work. But i think its hard, i cant boot if i overclock on this choppy computer. I have an AT mobo.
