The reason why Southeast Asian martial arts (Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, East Timor) are not as well-known as East Asian martial arts (China, Japan, Korea) is because most of Southeast Asia were colonized by Europeans (Netherlands (Indonesia--- East Timor used to be part of Indonesia), Spain & U.S. (Philippines), and England (Malaysia--- Brunei and Singapore used to be part of Malaysia)) for many centuries and during colonization these indigenous martial arts were banned. It wasn't until all three countries were finally independent from these colonizers that their indigenous martial arts started to emerge again. Until now they still try to gain recognition through their own countries as well as other countries outside of Southeast Asia.
Pencak Silat is usually being executed with traditional chant-like music as accompaniment (I'm not sure if Malaysian style also has music with it but Filipino-style Pencak Silat is absolute silence, no music accompaniment), even when two people are sparring. There's some clips of it in YouTube. Interesting stuff.

My parents (though my dad trained longer) did train in Pencak Silat when they were in high school. It was a compulsory phys ed class for them back in the Philippines in their town. I didn't get a chance to train in it but one day, hopefully, I will. x.x
