To destroy Project Carthage and, 24 times a couple thousand hours later, hide with Aelita from the MIB.

What Project Carthage was, we have no substancial idea.
(yeah, the cool links in my old sig died. :( A few nerdy newish projects are here. )

This was revealed in "The Key", episode 52.

Since it was a military project, he probably made xana for it. Just think in the real world the advantages you would have if you had XANA.

This is speculating, but maybe lyoko was made as a training tool for soldiers. Maybe to learn strategy or get accuracy up.

A lot of this information can be derived from TB3's documentary Lyoko Decoded. Take a gander at YouTube and search for it, or look in the Site Discussion forum.

I recall hearing from some source (I thought it was the show itself, but since you guys don't remember it, I guess I was wrong) that Franz Hopper built Lyoko during the Cold War so that it would be a refuge for humanity in case there really was a nuclear war and the Earth was destroyed. But it's so hokey and incomplete (it's only got those four "generic" Earth-like environments) because the government didn't approve of his work and sent the MIBs to put a stop to it... thus setting in motion the events of the show.

...this is off topic, but have you noticed how hard it is to describe the concept of the show to someone who doesn't know about it without giving away at least some spoilers? Or at least, it's very hard to do it if you don't want the show to sound stupid and a vestige of eighties sci-fi. Some things just don't fly that way.

That doesn't work. If a nuke goes of near the factory, Lyoko would be wiped out by the resulting EMP (or am I thinking of something else?)

I actually hadn't "realized" that in order for Lyoko to exist, the super computer has to exist, too. Unless, in the thing I had heard, Franz Hopper only thought about the destruction of natural resources that keep humanity alive, not the mass of the Earth itself. But it's not EMP you're thinking of, it's nuclear fallout. EMP requires some technical wizardry with large magnets, (as I understand it) not a big messy explosion.
