Reinforcement of school archetypes

Postby Taelia » Tue Oct 07, 2008 12:35 am

Through some research, I've deduced that the characters of Code Lyoko show and/or reinforce common archetypes in school- and/or family-related fiction:

Jeremie - nerdy boy
Aelita - innocent and demure girl
Odd - weird kid
Ulrich - "Sasuke"-type kid (troubled, moody, constantly pushed beyond his limits)
Yumi - Goth girl
Jim - Drill sergeant-coach
Suzanne (aka Mrs./Ms. Hertz) - Schoolmarm
Millie and Tamiya - annoying snoopy children
Hiroki - annoying little brother
Jean-Pierre - (occasional) stern principal
Sissi - Popular/spoiled teenager

They aren't stereotypes. They're archetypes. Every story employs basic character types in some way or another. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. Nor can it be avoided altogether since pretty much every character type has already been thought of. Finally, they aren't necessarily too far off the mark. I've certainly seen these archetypes play out in real life.

Yumi is not goth.

Goths don't wear cute shirts with little pink stars on them.

I'm sure there's more to being goth that favoring the color black...

Here's one of my fave archetypes: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MissingMom

I like this one because we never see Sissi's missing mother.

Maybe Sissi's mom just lives in some other town.

Or maybe they got divorced and the father got custody.
