Just keep posting until the thread goes to a new page. That clears up the bug instantly.

I recently experienced an attack of the forum ghost. I thought it was something serious; I PMed Erynn about it. Not a good idea once I figured out that a majority of Lyoko Freak knew what it was. This happens when the topic number changes, like "The friendly neighborhood Shag Bar" changed from 137857 to 3171.

I'd like to know that too. Boft, why did BB of C get banned and why is Starway number two? I need to have a look at somethings. I think I know the answer.

User number one is always reserved for the guest user on all phpbb based forums even if guest posting is disabled. Therefore, first registered user (StarWay in this case) takes user id #2. Fairly simple.

As for why BB of C is banned. Eh. No clue honestly. Although I am sure Erynn has a good reason for it.

Answer #1 can be found several times throughout this thread, and answer #2 is not your business, nor does it belong here.

Well, I have a question three. When I look at the memberlist, it says that Star Way is number one. What's up with that? I thought Star Way was number two.

The numbers on the memberlist are different from a user ID. My userID is 2, and the anonymous poster has 1. However, on the memberlist I am #1 since the anonymous poster isn't technically a real account...

This also happens when a user is deleted. If they were, say, #82 on the memberlist, but then they got deleted, the user below them (previously #83) would become #82 on the memberlist, but whatever their user ID was would remain the same. This is why we have 900 users, but the range of user IDs go all the way up to 1100.

Wow, I'm surprised nobody figured this out yet.

1. With the first user being number 2: phpbb uses a MySQL database for its storage. The users table has an auto-increment user ID column. The first user in the table is actually Anonymous - but it has an ID of -1, yes, MINUS ONE. That was the first user created by phpbb, so it should have had an id of 1, but it was changed afterwards.

2. With the ghost user: If you set your timezone to GMT, then it would say he posted on Jan 1st, 1970, 00:00. That time is called the Unix Epoch, and it's used as the starting point for any PHP date. In PHP all dates are stored as a number, which is the number of seconds since the Unix Epoch. Now, this "ghost user" appears whenever someone deletes a post, and goes away when someone posts again. Since the post doesn't exist, the date is assumed to be zero.

Thanks for posting that. (But as soon as it gets buried as newer posts come in, people will be asking the same questions again. Happens every time, hah.)

As for the second explaination, the reason why the "ghost" appears isn't when someone deletes a post (or else we'd have quite a few ghosts flying around, haha)... I'm almost 100% positive it happens when the connection between the database and the forum times out. If someone is making a post just then, it gets a partial write to the DB, and then shows up as Dec. 31 1969 because a lot of information was lost when the user tried to post just as the forum and the database decided to have a momentary lover's quarrel.

Uh, no. Either the post is completely entered into the DB or not at all. There is no such thing as a "partial write to the DB".

It only happens when posts are deleted, but usually the forum gets resynced after a deletion to stop the ghost appearing. However, there's a bug in PHPBB that prevents this resyncing once in awhile.
