Chosen_one wrote:Well, I have a question three. When I look at the memberlist, it says that Star Way is number one. What's up with that? I thought Star Way was number two.
Rob wrote:Wow, I'm surprised nobody figured this out yet.
1. With the first user being number 2: phpbb uses a MySQL database for its storage. The users table has an auto-increment user ID column. The first user in the table is actually Anonymous - but it has an ID of -1, yes, MINUS ONE. That was the first user created by phpbb, so it should have had an id of 1, but it was changed afterwards.
2. With the ghost user: If you set your timezone to GMT, then it would say he posted on Jan 1st, 1970, 00:00. That time is called the Unix Epoch, and it's used as the starting point for any PHP date. In PHP all dates are stored as a number, which is the number of seconds since the Unix Epoch. Now, this "ghost user" appears whenever someone deletes a post, and goes away when someone posts again. Since the post doesn't exist, the date is assumed to be zero.
Star Way wrote:As for the second explaination, the reason why the "ghost" appears isn't when someone deletes a post (or else we'd have quite a few ghosts flying around, haha)... I'm almost 100% positive it happens when the connection between the database and the forum times out. If someone is making a post just then, it gets a partial write to the DB, and then shows up as Dec. 31 1969 because a lot of information was lost when the user tried to post just as the forum and the database decided to have a momentary lover's quarrel.
