Question for all members

Postby TB3 » Sat Dec 10, 2005 5:22 pm

Hi

This is just a small question.

Does anyone on the forums have any problems with their accounts, because so far the only people I've seen with problems are myself, and my brother.

Most people are aware of the problems I had (my account got deleted), but TL has also got a minor problem in that it's imposible to access his post-log, or search for him using the search function.

I'm just wondering if anyone else has specific problems with their accounts or if these are the only ones - if we are unique then the law of odds suggest a single 3rd party has tried to hack both of us, which might make us a liability to this forum.

In good faith

Hmm, no I don't think I have had any problems yet. If I do, I'll try to find a way to fix it and warn people about it.

I personally haven't noticed any other strange things aside from your's and your brother's cases, nor has anyone else reported anything.

If this is, indeed, the work of a hacker, I have no clue what they did/are doing.

Those of you without any problems don't need to post unless you have anything useful to contribute. Thank you. :)

Thanks for the responses guys - chances are there's nothing in this but the thought struck me. If anything else occurs to me that puts the forum at risk I'll stop coming, but I sincerly hope that never happens, I have way too much fun here!

I don't know anything about phpBB, but I heard something about a worm infecting the software in some cases. Could this maybe be a possible cause?

Then again, why would a worm do so little damage?

I have come to the conclusion that I have that problem, and only on a few users accounts...
What will you remember me for?

I have posted a support thread over at the official phpBB forums about this and although i dont have an exact answer as of yet, it seems to be related to the fact that your usernames are so short. ill keep you all updated.

yeah. check out this thread for an indepth explanation. in shorthand, its a security protection in the search function to keep malignant users from tieing up the database.

So if I, say, make my username longer...In theory, it should work?

I highly doubt it Hidushikai, as some posts just above yours verify that the 'search problem' is due to short usernames, and my account getting deleted months ago was due to a server error.

Thanks, Vchat. I'm going to make an FAQ post about this as soon as I can.

I don't think that it would be too much to consider purchasing a VBulletin at this point, Erynn. I have checked their prices, and while somewhat steep I believe it's worth it. Plus, they seem to have software that allows you to transfer members/threads/etc from a phpBB forum to their's. You should look into it.

If I say this statement is false, and it is, then that makes it true... or does it?

No, it didn't. :) Forum rank requirements have just been upped a bit in post count recently. Read this thread page for further information.
