Dean Koontz's Odd character

Postby Lyoko Wario » Wed Jul 09, 2008 8:56 pm

I don't know if too many of you are aware of this, but Dean Koontz, that author everyone is familiar with but nobody you know has ever read, usually spotted in the bargain book bin near the checkout lines at Albertson's, has a character named Odd. The other day, I picked up one of his books with no intention of buying it and read the back cover. It began thusly: "not many fictional characters are recognized by first names alone." That bothered me. The whole setup bothered me. Because you know and I know that there's only one Odd. I get ever so slightly defensive whenever Dean Koontz brings back his subpar Odd in another supposedly critically-aclaimed novel. Because he's got no business messing with Odd. Odd is too good for him. And no matter what he says, I'll will forever think that, in some way, he was inspired to create his Odd after being fleetingly exposed to our Odd and does not recognize it.

Does anyone else get inane, yet emotionally significant feelings like this?

You're actually comparing Odd Thomas to Odd Della Robbia?

Come on... Odd from Code Lyoko blows. Odd Thomas is a very good character and book series, actually.

Odd Thomas existed first in 2003, by the way. I highly doubt Koontz was exposed to Della Robbia back then...

Not comparing, per se. I'm a loyal one-Odd man. I just whine about names.

I distinctly recall me being in seventh grade when CL started airing on Miguzi. I was thirteen years old when I was in seventh grade, and it was 2003 when I was thirteen. Furthermore, both Odds... well, no. Odd Della Robbia and that filthy name-thief popped up around the same time, and since creative types usually have some link to one another, I don't doubt that Koontz discovered the name, was intrigued, and passed it off as his own coincidental knowledge. And don't gimme none of your "undeniable facts" hocus pocus. My mind is made up.

Oh, that's it. You are now VOTED OFF THE ISLAND!!

...by the way, this is all mostly for humor. So, what's this "Odd" Thomas like?

Another Odd?
This makes me unexplainably sad

And I've never heard of Dean Koontz so that's probably why I never complained about it.

Perhaps we can just walk around and pretend there's still only one Odd.

Odd Thomas debuted on May 20, 2003.
Code Lyoko debuted in France on September 03, 2003.

So if you're labeling Koontz as a name-theif, also name Moonscoop/Antefilms for being name-thieves too. Then again, I'm gonna expect you to counter me with saying "Garage kids existed first", which is true... but you forget that hardly anyone in this world (except for a few million CL fans) actually gives a d*mn about Code Lyoko. I doubt Koontz would have known about CL's existence, let alone know about GK. He, like most of the world, wouldn't know or care about CL's existence.

There's nothing more to argue here.

Didn't we all learn that Odd is a Norwegian male name...?

Why on earth is everyone making a big deal that there's more than one Odd in the entertainment world?

It's only a name, people... it's like saying one show can't use the name Yumi just because there's already a Yumi in CL. (and there's a gazillion characters named Yumi if you watch a lot of anime and Japanese drama shows.... =T).

I'm naming my kid Odd! :D J/K.., but you're right about the Yumi Part. There's a Yumi in Rurouni Kenshin, to start with, and Kenshin aired in 1999, I checked around online.

Besides, what's the big deal if they share a name? Do both Odd's the same last name? No. Do both act the same way? I don't think so. It's not as if Koontz is trying to replicate the Odd Della Robbia we all love (and are sometimes annoyed by :) ).

I think the real question is whether the BBC ripped parts from either or both Odds to create the Ood.

Because I vaguely remember the "song" referred to in Doctor Who S4's "Planet Of the Ood" sounding a lot like BREAK BREAK BREAK DANCE!
My SN is spelled Feld, not Field. Keep getting it right, Carth.
I has opinions. On things.

"I am the Lord thine Odd, thou shalt have not have strange Odds before me."

Dean Koontz has violated the First Commandment in the Gospel of Planet Cool.

And my apologies to anyone humorless enough to actually be offended by my immature silliness.
