I can tell you exactly why Avatar was nominated, and likely will win. Viewership of the Oscars is higher when blockbusters are nominated for best picture. Remember when that movie Crash beat Brokeback Mountain? Did anyone here actually watch No Country for Old Men? It wasn't even nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Picture. The award ceremonies where these films won are some of the lowest-watched ever.
On the other end of the spectrum, the 70th Academy Awards were the most watched ever. You know what took Best Picture and 10 other awards that night? Titanic. Hey, what a coincidence, it's the other record-breaking James Cameron film. Sensing a pattern?
So they're going to sacrifice what used to be a very prestigious award to win and give it to an unoriginal and quite frankly, kind of racist movie...for the sake of ratings?
...I'd say I was shocked and disgusted, but everything is given up for "ratings" these days, so I guess it's no surprise that the Academy has now too.
