ASTHMA

Postby lyokodude » Mon Oct 24, 2005 10:31 am

For you who don't know what it is heres the def:Asthma is a chronic lung condition that can develop at any age.
It is most common in childhood and occurs in approximately 7-10% of the pediatric population.
Asthma is the most common chronic respiratory disease of children; it accounts for 1/4 of school absenteeism.
It affects twice as many boys as girls in childhood; more girls than boys develop asthma as teenagers, and in adulthood, the ratio becomes 1:1 males to females.
Asthma affects children in varying degrees, from very mild (only during vigorous exercise) to very severe. Children with severe asthma may have symptoms every day that may cause some lifestyle restriction; in these children symptoms occur more easily and more frequently.
There is a general trend of increased deaths and hospitalizations from asthma recorded in all the industrialized countries of the world, Canada included.
In Canada, approximately 20 children and 500 adults die each year from asthma. However, with adequate treatment most deaths from asthma can be prevented.
For those who have it your not alone,I have it and many others.

(sorry for reviving a dead thread)
But I do have severe Asthma, and it is very painful for me. What I really hate is that if I forget to take my inhaler in the morning I'm huffing and puffing all day at school. I decided to post here because not many people don't really know what Asthma does. Most of them think that the person just coughs alot. Yes, I DO cough alot but that's after I take my first shot of the medication I must inhale. I have to cough to get the 20 pounds of mucus out of my lungs.(exaggeration) Not being able to breathe in the middle of the night can be really stressful, all I can do is make a faint groan hoping that my parents can hear me and call for help. So please don't take Asthma as a joke, it's very serious.

Hey Darkborn, thanks for sharing. I have asthma, too. My sister has it in a very mild form, and has since we were young. Mine came on after a bad case of bronchitis which lasted for six months when I was twenty-one. I have an inhaler with me everywhere I go in my purse, and one that stays next to my bed in case I have an attack at night.

The worst attack I ever had was when I was in high altitudes and I went for a walk with my grandparents. I began wheezing about a mile from the house, and could barely breathe by the time we got back. I laid down while my mom searched for my inhaler. Thank goodness I packed it in my luggage, or else there would have been a nasty visit to emergency!

I have to talk to my doctor about maybe using a pill to prevent attacks, rather than just having my inhaler on me all the time, because I've been inactive out of fear of another attack for so long that I've gained weight, and I want to begin excersizing again.

It's weird, because my attacks can come from eating ice cream, or working out, or just being in hot, humid weather. Sometimes, all I have to do is breathe.

I've heard asthma symptoms can become less severe with maturity. I think that's what happened to my sister, because she works out at the gym and plays sports without any major problems, now. I don't think she even needs to use her inhaler that often.

I hope your syptoms go away with age, too. :)

Well, Thank you, but I doubt my symptoms go away. I've had it since birth and I'm 16.
