Involvement with popular TV shows

Postby Chad Rains » Sun Feb 05, 2006 2:34 am

Ok. This is one stupid idea that crossed my mind a little bit ago and I felt it needed its own open discussion here.

My basic take on those who are currently CL fans is that they are more attracted to those shows that aren’t wildly popular and are "diamonds in the rough" so to speak. And on the other side of the pond they are turned off by wildly popular programs that are WAY past their prime and have been milked to no end in the merchandise department.

At least this is my take on the situation and is my general feel for this whole mess. I used to be a fan of other cartoons such as digimon and pokemon, but once they became overly popular to the point where everybody and their dog knew about it, I got turned off and refused to watch them any longer.

Basically, though we do like some really popular things...

I never liked Pokemon, or Digimon...Or any anime or anything back when I was a little kid...
What will you remember me for?

I'm sorry, I don't watch a whole lot of TV. But I do enjoy The Suite Life of Zack and Cody. I don't know if that's so popular or not. ^^' One day Emilee and I will make a popular TV show so be on the lookout! :D

I liked ppokimon in the begning. but after seson one... it just lost my intrest. My rule of thume is when the epesodes become all flashy battles and big cool wepens, it's time to find a new hobby.

try this and you'll see just how bad it's goten.

1. Choose two populer shows
2. make a big vendiagram
3. Compair and contrast the shows.

It can get alittle scary.

I used to like pokemon. But when they started adding 350 pokemon or so, it lost my interest.

Yay Disney Channel! lol I watch Phil of the Future. ^^; (What? It's FUNNY! lol)

And... that's about it, in terms of "unpopularity" lol

I watched Pokemon and Digimon when I was younger... it was bordering on obsessive, man. >.>

I like Kim Possible, a little. ^_^
And That 70's show, But I havn't watched it for a while because Smallville comes on at the same time... I used to like Teen Titans, but this last season wasn't the best. The last three episodes were good, though.

I can't say that that generalization applies to me entirely in relation to shows. I loved Pokemon...and I still do. I have only recently stopped watching it because they took Misty out of the cast list, who was my favorite human character. Not watching it is my way of protesting, in the hopes that they'll bring her back.

I like "Kim Possible", which is also a widely popular Disney show, and I am prone to watching several popular Nick shows from time to time such as "The Fairly OddParents", and, yes, even "SpongeBob Squarepants".

Anime-wise, I've become attached to both popular and well-known animes such as "Rurouni Kenshin" and "InuYasha".

The shows I watch are based on one of two things, or a combination of the two. They either make me laugh, as is the case with a show like "Fairly Oddparents", or they have a compelling storyline with characters that I can identify with, as is the case with say, "InuYasha" or ".Hack//Sign".

Shows that cover that both make me laugh and give me a great storyline and cast of characters, usually become the ones I love most. "Code Lyoko" has both of those qualities in spades. "Rurouni Kenshin" and "Kim Possible" too, as did "Pokemon" even, it's first few seasons (and movies).

I don't usually discriminate as to whether a show is "popular" or "underground". To me, it's the story being told that matters. :)

"You're a creepy genius."

I don't think any generalization is a good fit to an individual. Let's see, television. Not counting Code Lyoko....

Really likes: Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Teen Titans, Doctor Who, Mythbusters.
Likes: Lupin the 3rd, W.I.T.C.H., Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
Not bad: S-cry-ed, Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi, various Adult Swim programs.
Occasional guilty pleasure: Law & Order (any version). (A very good show to sew to, I find. :D )

Beyond being heavily animation- and SF-skewed, I don't think it says a whole lot about me regarding my preferences.

I like KND and Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi. Emilee and I enjoy watching HHPAY because I am almost exactly like Ami and she is almost exactly like Yumi.

I didn't even count Nick shows. ^^; I watch FOP too, but I haven't done it a lot lately... on CN I occasionally watch HHPAY and I used to watch Ed, Edd n Eddy after school until I got tired of it... (heck I even esed to watch the new eps when they premiered)

Yay Ghost in the Shell! *cheers FA*

Adult Swim shows? Aqua Teen Hunger Force is one of my favorite shows of all time. Not only does it make me laugh, but sometimes it has me doubled over and short of breath. :*D (I have Volume 3 & 4 on DVD.. idk why I always start backwards with stuff. >.>)

I actually have Ignignorkt and Err on my voicemail.. but then things happen like my grandmother calling it and demanding to know who that "creepy voice" was xD

Me, it's the stuff like the Beatles and Spinal Tap references, or the parodies (like the Yu-Gi-Oh! one). That, and the surreal elements. The episodes that play it straight and end with a cutesy moral all leave me cold.

Your De-Virtualization wrote:Yay Ghost in the Shell! *cheers FA*

(Bows.) I'll watch at least one episode of any dub with Richard Epcar in it.:) OT: And I've been a fan of cyberpunk since reading Neuromancer years ago. Just finished Glenn Grant's Burning Day, which owes a good bit to Ghost in the Shell. Good story, though. A bit shocking at times, but no worse than William Gibson's stuff.

Lord Ryu wrote:Yup, that's a strange list.

I think that's about all we can safely assume: Every one of us has odd tastes.:) If two of us like the same show, it's probably for different reasons.

Here's what I like:

1: One Piece
2: Code Lyoko (duh)
3: Avatar
4: Yu-Gi-Oh GX (the new episodes with the shadow games are AWESOME because Zana finally dies!!! *looks at tv* Crap, he lived.)

I used to watch FOP, SBSP, TT, and several others but they don't appeal to me much anymore.
