Do you have to pay for a copyright or do you make it by yourself?

If you do not get what I'm asking:

1) Do you pay the Goverment for a copyright on any image you make?

Or

2) Do you make the Copyright yourself for free?

Most people are telling me I need to buy it.

No idea.
If you don't want others to steal your art, I'd recommend you put some sort of identification on it (like my first avatar; it has JEREMIFIED in the background if you look closely.)
thank you all for the good memories <3

Copyrights (©) are legal and free.

Restricted (®) are paid for and for bigger business. You use this when you SELL something.

Trademark (â„¢) are when you copyright a PHRASE. This is costly, too.

OH! With most fonts, you make those symbols by using ASC11.

Hold "ALT" and press the following key combonations, then let go to make the symbols;

© = 0169
® = 0174
â„¢ = 0153

When you create something, it is automatically copyrighted to you. Even if it's fanart or whatever, it's still your intellectual property, and anyone who steals it is doing something very illegal!

You can register stuff officially with the Library of Congress, but all that does is make it so that if someone does steal your work, you have automatic proof that they did so. Also, doing this is not free... I don't know what they ask for, but I do know that you have to pay.

BTW,

Thanks for explaining all of that. ^^
Don't bother sending me messages or anything, I'm not in charge of the site anymore.

But I do love dancing.

I'm a prospective writer and apparently in Britain if you seal a copy of your work in an envelop and get it date-stamped at a Post Office, it can serve as offical proof of ownership.

That is used in Jamaica, too.

However, one can also get a copyright by registering the work at the National Archive. I have done so for a poetry book, for which I also got a publisher's registration number and a ISBN.

Very cool indeed - are you going to try and find a publisher now?

Speaking of Copyrights...

*Freestyle Bulls**t Series are mine completely. Anyone who tries to fake them will get messed up by me. Understood?

I think we need a LF Thread Copyrights topic eventually.

Technically, since I got a publisher's registration number, I *am* a publisher... however I have neither the equipment, the ability, nor the first clue as to how to do it.

I have about eighty copies of that book gathering dust, if termites haven't eaten them. The mothballs probably wore off by now...
