Stephen Colbert Runs for President. (Huh?!)

Postby JesusFreak » Wed Oct 17, 2007 9:41 am

Quoted From Yahoo,com:

Yahoo wrote:Stephen Colbert announced his candidacy for president on "The Colbert Report," tossing his satirical hat into the ring of an already crowded race.

"I shall seek the office of the President of the United States," announced Colbert on his Comedy Central show Tuesday, as red, white and blue balloons fell around him.

Colbert had recently satirized the coyness of would-be presidential candidates by refusing to disclose whether he would seek the country's highest office -- a refusal that often came without any prompting.

Shortly before making the announcement, Colbert appeared on "The Daily Show" (the show which spawned Colbert's spin-off) and played cagy, claiming he was only ready to consider a White House bid. He entered the studio set pulled by a bicycle pedaled by Uncle Sam and quickly pulled out a bale of hay and a bottle of beer to show that he was "an Average Joe."

Colbert said his final decision would be announced on a "more prestigious show," which turned out to be his own.

"After nearly 15 minutes of soul-searching, I have heard the call," said Colbert.

His recent best-seller, "I Am American (And So Can You!)" allowed him to mock the now-standard approach to a White House run, complete with a high-profile book tour.

Colbert said he planned to run in South Carolina, "and South Carolina alone." The state, one of the key early primaries, is also Colbert's native state. Earlier this week, South Carolina public television station ETV invited Colbert to announce his candidacy on its air.

Exactly how far the mock conservative pundit planned to stretch his impression of a presidential candidate wasn't clear. Colbert rarely breaks character on camera, including at his memorable speech at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner last year.

The Comedy Central host has often mobilized his fans ("Colbert Nation"), encouraging them to vote to have a Hungarian bridge named after him, for example, or to vandalize Wikipedia.com with his version of "truthiness" and "wikiality."

The comedian said he would run as both a Democrat and Republican. He earlier explained the strategy: "I can lose twice." He claimed three running mate possibilities: Colbert-Huckabee, Colbert-Putin or Colbert-Colbert.

Minutes after announcing his presidential pursuit, Colbert welcomed CBS political analyst Jeff Greenfield to ask how he had changed the race.

"This is going to be one for the books," said Greenfield.

A spokesman for Colbert said he would be unavailable for further comment Tuesday evening.

In a guest column for Maureen Dowd in Sunday's New York Times, Colbert wrote: "I am not ready to announce yet -- even though it's clear that the voters are desperate for a white, male, middle-aged, Jesus-trumpeting alternative."

You know, I don't think I can take this guy seriously. I just hope he doesn't take things too far, he could me messing with a lot more than a popularity vote.

If he wins, I will, (at the time,) be "OMGWTF?"

But later I will laugh about it.

He isn't supposed to be taken seriously.

And in that pro/con thing about China, that Transformer he was holding was the trailer-base to Armada Optimus Prime. Just saying.

He'll proply get charged with false advertisement.

Besides, we don't elect someone by popular vote. We elect them through the electoral college.

I say we all vote for him and make him President. Then America will officially enter the Golden Age of Idiocy. After all, he couldn't be as bad as Busch. "It's fuzzy math." Hail to the dumb chief!

Was the other alternative a soap dish?

...no wait, I apologize. That was an insult to the soap dish.

THe other alternatives were Ralph Nader and Al Gore.

The second year alternatives were John Kerry and Ralph Nader.

Gore is too worried about climate change (the planet has warming and cooling cycles per decades or so) And Kerry can't ever make up his mind on squat.

I know this is off-topic and I'm sorry, but just to let you know, it takes much more time for global temperatures to vary (under natural conditions). Otherwise, species wouldn't be able to adapt to the change and would become extinct (Amphibians are the most vulnerable). The temperature during the last decades has been increasing too fast too soon so I do believe we should at least get a little concerned about it and not just dismiss the problem.

I wish I could say something on-topic but I'd never heard of that guy before. Anyway, he'll ever get elected.

Seriously, I know this is off topic as well, but considering this thread is about Colbert running for Prezi, I'll risk it. Do not dis people like Al Gore for worrying about Global Warming. You need to get yourself informed before you go spouting off like, because you're basically saying that anyone who believes Global Warming is an idiot cackpot. I hate politicians in general, but Al Gore is a great man for dedicating his career to opening the eyes of the world to the looming disaster threatening our planet. Scientists have been trying to make people listen for years. He's just the first one who has gotten the public's attention. "Oh, the planet has warming and cooling cycles per decades. It's completely normal." It's that kind of ignorant post that really ticks me off.

...This is always what happens when I even talk neutrally of Gore. I wasn't dissing him for giving a care about the earth, I was talking about His run for Prez.

And if the next post isn't on-topic after the next, I'm calling in the mods.

Unfortunatly I disagree with the films message... That the jester shouldn't run the kingdom. I've grown sick of kings and queens who blind our eyes and steal our dreams. I want change.

Actually, after all that fuss was over, they found that Bush actually did win Florida.

By 500 votes.

Gotta love a liberal-leaning media. Never tells the whole truth if it involves Democrats losing.
