Privacy at Home

Postby Gauntlet » Sun Nov 04, 2007 5:19 pm

A couple of days ago, I was watching a rerun of some talk show while flipping channels. A psychologist was saying that as long as her children are living under her roof, she could look and read her child's information at will. It got me thinking, enough to work on it over the next couple of days. Do you think parents should be allowed total access to their child's private information (Blog, forum, e-mail, IM conversations, computer files, visiting history, etc.)?

It feels like I have a propensity to shut down threads whenever I leave an opinion, so I'll post later. I'm looking for responses from anyone; minors and adults with/without children. Speak hypothetically, if needed.

Edit: I guess this can also double as general privacy, not just the internet. Fixed the poll.

It's situational, but not ALL the time. God, I hate when parents do that!!!!!

I highly disagree with parents looking at the kids' history and trying to scrutinize it. That's why I can't type in some stuff on the forum because my stupid CYBERsitter won't let me.

Some songs I can't listen to or get info for, like Limp Bizkit's breakout hit, due to slang that it thinks that it was "inappropriate".

CYBERsitter is an Internet blocker that blocks useless words.

Can we get some elaborated answers? I'm not trying to be sarcastic; I'm interested in hearing what the opinions are. One-liners are...blah.

I'd say yes, unless you knew for a fact that you had a legitimate reason to do so, i.e: (to put it blatantly) your child looking at porn, etc. But downright invasion of privacy, or even nagging, i.e: My grandmother's constant "Who are you talking to?"

Me: "It's a forum. I'm not talking to anyone in particular. I've said that a million times. =/ "

Her: "Well it's my job to be concerned for your safblah blah blah blah"

Me: "It's not like I'm talking to some 40-year-old gay pedophile."

Her: (Some variation of "go to your room")

So, yeah...

<.< Parents have full right to snoop threw their kids stuff until they're 18. living under their house rent free, writing on a diary or a computer more then likely they payed for.

You want a freedom to privacy you got to work for it and earn it yourself. Until then privacy is a privelage, not a right... and it's based soley on trust.

I meant the "Significant Other" CD with its hit that has the letters N, O, K, I, and E.

You make me dissapointed.... I was hoping they made something new that didn't suck like Unquestionable Truth.

Man that was a good CD too... I need to buy it off Itunes again.

Okay, I've changed my stance on the issue somewhat. I agree with Piper (THE APOCALYPSE IS NIGH!) about privacy being a privilege until your 18. However, College age students wanting to hide their grades from their parents aren't being very smart, methinks. More likely than not, Mom and Dad are paying for college in the first place.

As promised.

I do think parents should respect their child's privacy. I believe it's a bit of a slap in the face if his or her private information must be monitored--what about trust? If the child and parent(s) had a good relationship, I would like to think the child would be the one to bring up questionable content to the parent, and not have his/her mother have to snoop around.

The issue is, I believe, just a lack of communication. The basic information--don't give out personal information, be cautious when searching with a search engine, don't download questionable files--should be all that's needed. Obviously, even the good apples falter and ignore these guidelines, but, for the most part, I think children should be allowed privacy, internet and diary-wise.

Then again, to be honest, if I had children, I would probably distantly monitor them. I wouldn't be reading their message boards or reading their emails, but certain forums and websites do have questionable advertisements and material (a website for a young audience, but then a little 18+ section in the corner... ughn). Nowadays, if you visit a harmless forum for a TV show or game, you'll more likely than not find inappropriate ads and questionable material. I wouldn't do it because I don't trust the child, but because its too easy to find that stuff by accident.

My two cents.
