Do you suppose they're really as rude (esp. to Americans) as everyone says they are?

I find it hard to believe that every individual on a street would be rude and snooty to me.

I dont think everyone would be rude to you. Im guessing as long as you dont display the typical "america is better than everyone else" attitude, then I doubt there would be a problem.

the main reason they hate americans is cause some go there and start taking pictures of the local people and start blocking the walk ways, but in general no just don't act like they're a rare species or a alien or what ever. take it from the guy who has a french teacher that goes to france and sees it happen, and don't tell the waiters their wrong on pronuctiation. kind of off and on topic, my teacher was in france once and this one guy ordered something, the waiter kindly corrected him, and the guy was like no what ever it was, and the waiter went off to go get it, and the guy told his wife "I wonder why that guy was pronouncing that word wrong? well yeah, just stay on their good side, don't correct their french, don't act like their aliens, and just be polite, and if your going there tip, some chefs will actually get insulted if you ask for ketchup. but to actually answer your question, i doubt they truly hate us.

The french in my mind are extremely proud of their language, and when some American comes in and starts demanding to speak english, their hurt. My french teacher freshman year said that knowing french, at least some, will greatly help relations.

No offense to the French, but I saw a couple of guys on the subway yesterday and heard them try to speak English.
It was pitiful. (And they criticize us on our pronunciation).
I really gotta fix up this theme

*cringe* vous parle français? there we go, anyway, nah they don't hate them, like barney always says "i love you, you love me, please don't blow me up in a tree." the french people are barney. not really, that was kind of wrong to say, well no they don't hate us.

edit: it could also be parle-vous français? both of which are asking do you speak french, and actually both of which shouldn't be parle it should be parlez, correction on my own behalf. and parle if your using the "Tu" form of parler.

Europeans in general are friendly people. So, I don't think French people would be rude to Americans or other nationalities, but watch out for old women (My friend got humiliated one time just because of passing near an old lady).

At first glance, this is what I thought your comment said.

Anyway, that old lady story sounds intriguing... what happened?

Hahaha sorry, I wasn't clear enough. I didn't mean it like that, the thing is, Old ladies are so sensible here; you can't look at them, you can't sit next them at the bus(even if it was the last seat in the bus), oh and the most annoying thing is that, THEY KEEP STARING! And they study everything in you! What you're wearing, holing, doing, talking, and where you are going!
Ok, so maybe they're not THAT annoying, but they can really get on your nerves sometimes,,,,so just stay away from them.
.....
....
um.....do u think I should get to learn better English? O.o

No. Someone who assumes that would be generalizing and therefore racist.

Or maybe it's ethnocentrism. I'm bad at telling the difference.

Also, I have no opinion on humans born on a different piece of rock than I.

I was about to correct you on that until I read the added 'z' in 'parlez'.

France is very cultured and sophisticated. They have been raised to be classy and Americans being on the other end of the spectrum kind of make them look the other way. Face it - if you were born into an upper-class family with tons of money and passed by someone who was living on the streets with diseased skin and moldy food, it would make you cringe a little.

That's my take, anyway. I love France, for some reason. I love learning the language too xP
