Books into movies?

Postby Lyoko Wario » Sat Jun 20, 2009 2:42 pm

If you could turn any book / series of books into a movie / series of movies, which would you choose?

Oh, and they have to be fiction books. So no dictionaries and phone books!

My choice: The Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde.

And good versions of all <s>five</s> six Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy books by Douglas Adams.

Darn! I had Merriam-Webster: The Movie all planned.

FADE FROM BLACK
Narrator: "In the beginning, there was Aardvark. Noun. A large burrowing nocturnal mammal (Orycteropus afer) of sub-Saharan Africa that has a long snout, extensible tongue, powerful claws, large ears, and heavy tail and feeds especially on termites and ants."

And that's all I got, since my writers are on strike. Something about wanting pay. And food. Psh, food. Who needs it? Models and movie stars get along without it just fine. Look how sucessful they are!

But, in all honesty, perhaps The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky would make a good movie. It would be a somewhat dark, rather emo movie. But deep. Apparently the author thinks so too, because I just read the Wikipedia page and it says he's working on a screenplay.

I'd like to see an Artemis Fowl movie, too. The author says he's working with people on it, but I'm pretty sure it's not actualy going to ever happen.

Whoeheartedly agree on the Jasper Fforde Thursday Next series. Also, Lisa McMann's Wake series (see my avatar) would make a really good movie. Laura Whitcomb's A Certain Slant of Light would be challenging, but do-able. Also, I feel like I'm the only one that's read them, but a good kids movie could surely be made out of Theodore Taylor's Cape Hatteras trilogy.

It's all very scientifical. |D

Damn these forums' inability to allow multi-quotes! I'll have to address you individually...

@ Lyoko422: I've been wondering about Artemis Fowl, since the author, Eoin Colfer, was the one selected to write the sixth book in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series, previously by Douglas Adams, my favorite series and author of all time (we also need a good series of movies based on that; the only one we have is trash). Oh, and love the dictionary joke! The last time I tried this on another forum, I just said "book" and everyone suggested the dictionary and the phone book, so yeah.

@ Stonecreek: Schweet! I never thought I'd come across another Thursday Next fan! Everyone I try to talk to about that wonderful series just gives me a blank look. The thing is, Jasper Fforde is really afraid of his books suffering from Adaptation Decay, so he refuses to sell the film rights unless they let him direct, which is obviously not going to happen (although he did use to work in the film industry). In any case, here's hoping. And looking forward to Shades of Grey / Colour by Numbers.

There's too many to count...! I adore books and picking even a few would be difficult. Let's see...

Singing the Dogstar Blues by Alison Goodman, definitely. It's an obscure Australian sci-fi dystopia novel that's freaking brilliant and needs a movie. Haroun and the Sea of Stories by Salman Rushdie would make a neat animated movie (and not talk down to kids, to boot). And, like people said, a decent adaptation of Hitchhiker's. Maybe a TV series. (Which reminds me, I'm also all for a more detailed and book-faithful Harry Potter animated series once the movies are done with. But that's just me.)

Oh, and while this may not qualify as a "movie", no matter what the creator says about it, a Yotsuba&! anime would be brilliant. Anyone agree? Ay?

You can do multi-quotes by opening the second quote in another window and then copying and pasting the quote text into your main post. 8)

someone interviewed Eoin Colfer and asked him about an Artemis Fowl movie, He said they were working on writing it but at the rate it was going it would be out "two years after I die"

but I'd really love to see that series on the big sceen, I think it'd be awsome
