A Virtual World

Postby darktemplar » Tue May 16, 2006 2:24 pm

Since XANADU became a video game project, here we may try to create a operational virtual world. Short glossary:

VW - Virtual world. Applications+Environment+Core+Services
Core - it's a piece of VW responsible for most basic operations, a VW processor.
Services - they provide more complex functions
Vcode - these are the instructions of VW. By those instructions applications can do something
Environment - non-applicational resources applications can utilize and interact with. Services can't modify it.
Application - an avatar, monster, etc. It can do something via instructions.
Query - executable's request to another executable.
Transaction - executable's interaction with environment
Laws - they regulate what applications can't do. They're superior to applications.
To act - when executables query.
Executables - applications and services.
Object - a set of data with vcode.
Dump - shot of informations from one moment
Dumper - tool which provides dumps.
Console - tool of superior control on VW.
Direct access - accessing hardware.
Mapping - connecting a point to vcode.
Hardware - are structures capable of storing information in format Core needs to.

Short diagram on connectablity

Environment------Core------Services
.............................|-------Applications

Services don't have a mapping, but applications do.

What stuff CAN:
Core: Direct access
Service: Queries
Application: Queries
What stuff MUST:
Core: Execute executables and provide transactions
Service: Handle applications request
Application: Obey Laws

Hardware, environment and Core are 'inanimate'. They do neither execute vcore nor are composed of it. Services and applications are composed of code, and it's executed to make them "think" and "live".

What do you think about my conception?

It's really good idea, except for the fact that we're not really gonna make this from scratch I don't believe. I was planning on using the quake 3 source code to be the base for the game, and since it's a multiplayer online capable game, we would converge on a server to play it. Maybe we should do my idea and then do your idea. Why did you start a whole new thread for this anyway? Well, I guess the xanadu thread is a little crowded but that's what the forum I set up is for. You should sign up there, you could really help. Just clikc the xanadu symbol in my signature. Again, really good ideas!

I considered Xanadu as a virtual map of Lyoko, or a video game. I don't want to do this. I see it rather as a virtual world, without a "player", a network processing the VW, providing flexible and fast environment for applications, combining features of virtual machine in 3D environment. Making a game won't make it because I see inflexible bots using inflexible scripting language and using THE MOST INFLEXIBLE POLYGONS to do all of this.

Is there such a thing as flexible polygons? Nuh-uh. If there is tell me it's news.

Also, since we are making this based on another game: first of all, the bot programming is highly acclaimed universally and secondly, we can edit it however we want. We have the source code for absolutely everything. My idea at the very beginnning was to really make a virtual world but I don't see how. And yeah, this is a video game.

Also, if you are talking about the whole thing where the towers in lyoko in turn affect the computer, well, to do that would be really easy.

Guys, in my mind isn't this really over-reaching yourselves?

XANADU is one thing - it's another deal entirely to make a virtual reality!

I never understood the point for XANADU.

Just wait 25 years until we'll have tools to create our own virtual realities.

Here's the point that some people don't get: we are making a video game for computer. It will have the choice of playing online with you guys or playing role-play style in a single-player version. That's all.

IS there a monthly fee? AND will it be freeware?

No, polygons ARE JUST INFLEXIBLE!

Scripting them will not make you take use source advantage of 3D environment!

We have them...

That is a somewhat hard question to answer right now, because you have to figure in server costs...I'll make a topic for discussing it on the XANADU boards, if that is alright with you JH.
