Time To Play The Game!! (Fifa World Cup Germany 2006 thread)

Postby MY85 » Mon Jun 05, 2006 4:35 pm

If you read the title of this thread, this isn't a thread for WWE Raw Superstar Triple H.

So... the world's biggest sport event (everything else, except exams and REALLY important stuff, goes to h*ll) will finally take place on Germany by June 9th, 2006!!

32 countries... 1 title... a chance to achieve glory, fame... to surprise or dissapoint the world...

Anyways: who do you think is going to win this new World Cup?

I'm looking forward to think that England, Czech Replubic or Netherlands are going to win the tournament.

Hope this thread gets loads of discussion...

I WAS going to make this thread around the 9th, but you beat me to it. Kudos for that. France has an easy draw, and the Netherlands is real hot heading in, but who can really stop Brazil? They'll win their 6th World Cup, but look out for a dark horse like Ukraine or Mexico to make strong showings.

Nice... at least, I can be safe to have discussions about the World Cup here.

As for my country... even if we don't have Cuauhtémoc Blanco on the list, we still hope to get further than 8th finals, and if possible, to win the World Cup. The U-17 Mexico squad won the U-17 World Cup at Perú by 2005. So why not hope to win this year?

Angola seems easy to defeat, Iran could be also easy, despite Ali Karimi and Ali Daei as their superstars, but the problem for my country would definately be Portugal.

How do you guys see the USA here? They gotta work their a**es off to try playing a good match against Czech Replublic and Italy. And Ghana will try to make a good impression.

I also think Brazil won't win the World Cup.

You're lucky this forum was meant to be mostly for US citizens. Otherwise, you wouldn't like the consequences of such mistake.

It's football!! Soccer is the word which the USA calls the real sport, football. Please, don't insult football with what you know as NFL (not Ni**a F***ing Large, in case you thought that). Keep that in mind.

Anyways....

For the first day, we got:

Deustchland vs Costa Rica

Despite the fact that we don't know if Michael Ballack's going to be on the starting eleven, I still think Deustchland would most likely win this match. They got the players, Lehmann's the main goalie (taking over Oliver Kahn's place after years of having Kahn as the main goalie... a tough decision made by Deustchland's coach, Jürgen Klinsmann), playing on their homeland (and they can't let them down when it all begins). On the other hand, Costa Rica could try to make a surprise... but it's going to be a tough match for them.

Ecuador vs Polska

I say they might tie... but being the Latinamerican I am, maybe I think it would be cool to see Ecuador winning on their debut.

Due to classes, 1 test and some other exam, I won't be able to see the first match. D:

What I can’t stand about this build-up is Wayne Rooney recovering from his foot injury. Yesterday, one paper's front page was a huge blow up of Wayne kicking a ball and the headline:

THERE IS A GOD!

WTF!? All that they think is that Wayne Rooney is going win the world cup single handed! Wayne Rooney this! Wayne Rooney that! Piss off Rooney! He's nothing but a yobbo who gets frame and fortune for being 'the youngest scorer at the European Cup ever!'

For Christ sake you tabloids! He's only one immature man! England can handle without him.

Moving away from Rooney, I’ll be honest with you. I’m not a fan of football and the World cup. I see it as a means for my Dad to take control of the TV when a match is on and for the BBC and ITV this mess up their TV programme timetable. Because of the World Cup, my Sunday TV highlight, ‘Top Gear’ has been canceled to accommodate the football.

World Cup> :die: <Me

As for TB3, at the supermarket he works, he’s has to wear a badge proclaiming his surrport the English team. This is what he said

I’m Welsh. This is a crime like hanging the Swastika from Buckingham Palace!

But anyway, go England.

Oh man... I wish Costa Rica could make a surprise... but I'm not setting my hopes too high... Many people in the country are worried beacuse they think Guimaraes (the head coach) didn't choose the best players available. Instead he decided to use some mediocre and overaged players and left many talented young men here. Besides he hasn't been able to stick with a consistent team through all the process.

But I guess anything's possible and the motivational factor can influence the way both teams play the opening game.

Whatever the result may be I'll be watching and supporting my team.

I will brave the early hours of the morning to get up and watch as many matches live as possible, because in the US, this is the only chance we get to see top-flight soccer (football, I know, but give me a break; I am an American...)

Lucky b***ard.

I'll miss the intro and the 1st half of Deustchland - Costa Rica due to an exam and some test and classes.

Ballack ain't starting this match... but he'll be ready to come back on the pitch against Polska.

I like Rooney. Who I really don't stand at all is Ronaldinho. For f**k's sake... every damn person I hear saying that "this is HIS World Cup", "Brazil will win", "he's the best", "he's a God", "he's on the side of Maradona and Pelé"... I got sick of him, despite his talent and skills. And I really hope he dies someday.

At the moment...

Deustchland 3 (Lahm 5:12; Klose 16:50 and 60:40) - 2 Costa Rica (Wanchope 11:35 and 72:15)

Interesting match for Costa Rica, despite the score...

Yeah I guess the fact that Costa Rica lost the match isn't surprising. But at least I'm glad that the team showed much improvement from recent matches (that gives me hope for the next encounters). And hey, I'm betting that the germans never thought Costa Rica could score 2 goals against them. And now I'm wondering, do you think the germans are happy with what their team showed in the field?

Germany winning 4-2 against Costa Rica is taken differently by the Germans. Some are happy that they won, but others are concerned because getting 2 goals (and the way they happened) will be a problem that Germany has to solve in order to attempt the World Cup trophy.

While I'm taking a break from the television... Ecuador is winning against Poland, 1-0. After a throw in, Agustín Delgado managed to comb the ball with his head and Carlos Tenorio dived into the area with a headshot to defeat the goalie Boruc and giving an important victory to Ecuador.

Let's wait to what happens on the 2nd half...

football, any of a number of games in which two opposing teams attempt to score points by moving an inflated oval or round ball past a goal line or into a goal. Differing greatly in their rules, these include soccer (association football) and rugby, in addition to the games covered in this article: American football, Canadian football, Gaelic football, and Australian football. In the United States, the word football generally refers only to the American game; in other parts of the world it usually means soccer. Football, amateur and professional, is perhaps the most popular spectator sport in the United States, attracting a total attendance of over 40 million and watched by many more millions on television each year.

My guess is it'll be a european team, why? because its now 9-8 to south america, and i cant see a team from another continant winning for a few more years, if i had to say a non-europe or south american, then it'd be south korea or australia

Italy or England, maybe against each other in the final

England won 1-0 with an own goal from Carlos Gamarra, whom head hit the ball after a free kick from Beckham. Then, Justo Villar (the goalie) got injured... England didn't shined so much, but they won.

Anyone here watching Sweeden vs Trinidad?

Pleased?? More like frustrated, because Villar's injury won't let him reach the first round's matches.

Beckham's free kick... it reminded me of the oldschool Manchester United David Beckham, the one I admired, before he left to Real Madrid and became ultra-advertised. But I still hope for England to improve in their next matches.

Damn... Zlatan and Henrik must feel really frustrated... they still (or any other Sverige player) can't score against Trinidad & Tobago.

But Sweden missed so many opportunities. They tested the T&T goalie a couple of times, but their attack was uncoordinated for much on the match. I had a feeling watching the match that Sweden felt like they should win before even stepping onto the pitch, and that got to their heads as they played.

I'm sure many were expecting Sverige to rape T&T, after the first few minutes... but when you see Larsson, Ibrahimovic, Ljungberg and company failing a lot, as well as the lack of accuracy and luck, they were getting pissed off as well.

Trinindad & Tobago was really shy to attack, but they at least defended well, even if their schematics left Sverige a wide oportunity to have the match on their favor. Also, T&T managed to fix themselves well after Avery John got sent to the showers (double yelow card), they could have won the match too, but leaving Stern John alone wasn't pretty wise.

In the end, yes, it's a impressive acheivement for T&T to start their first time without a loss, which was pretty much expected by many people. The Sweedish people's faces at the stadium was priceless. The T&T crowd celebrated the draw as a victory... but Paraguay got benefits from the draw, giving them hopes to continue in the battle, but it won't be easy.

So it seems Argentina won 2-1 against Ivory Coast. I couldn't watch it but my dad tells me that Argentina didn't play well at all.

Edit: Thanks for the correction, Rodrincubus

BJB... in English, it's Ivory Coast (the way their country call it is Cote D'Ivore). I also thought it could have been a tie. Didier Drogba scored very late. But Argentina had its good moments.

For today...

I missed Nederland's match (had to do something else) against Srbija I Crna Gora (Serbia & Montenegro)... but Nederland won 1-0 thanks to Robben.

México won 3-1 against Iran. Nice match for Mexico... I can see them passing to the 8th finals.

Now, to wait for Portugal-Angola. I hope Portugal doesn't win. *is a Figo hater*

I am so happy that Mexico won against Iran. :D They're gonna pass the first round, for sure...

And Portugal won 1-0 against Angola. You guys saw how Pauleta almost broke Hakan Sukur's record of fastest goal in a World Cup match?
