Yes, I agree that "United States of America" is too long. I think people call it America because "America" is part of "United States of America". In Chinese, the formal name for America is Meilijian Gongheguo (Meilijian meaning American, and Gongheguo meaning Republic), but people just say Meiguo (Mei being the first part of Mei, and guo meaning country).

As a chinese idiot with only cantonese knowledge, I was so confused when I was reading the formal way...The way most people say it I can understand...(maybe that's because I don't know the formal way to say the US in cantonese...)
