xD Kidding of course. I call it America because, well, saying the United States is too long. (Two words?! Come on! I'm too lazy for that.) And it sounds a little more homey, at times. idk. (Honestly though do British people go around calling their country the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland all the time?)
Yes, I agree that "United States of America" is too long. I think people call it America because "America" is part of "United States of America". In Chinese, the formal name for America is Meilijian Gongheguo (Meilijian meaning American, and Gongheguo meaning Republic), but people just say Meiguo (Mei being the first part of Mei, and guo meaning country).
