Windows XP Professional SP2!

Windows NT are Hybrid-kernel, while Linux is only monolithic!

(check these words in Wikipedia)

Linux is only good while I see it on some dirty old computer doing as server OS.

Know what does HYBRID-KERNEL mean? Means Windows NT is after all BASICALLY SAFER than Linux :P (

Yes, it sounds stupid :P

I use windows, personally because Macintosh isn't has highly techie developed in technology, although they do have good systems. I prefer WIndows.

The only things Windows is good for are gaming (which I don't do much of) and screwing up somehow (yes, I know this is avoidable, but you shouldn't have to put forth effort to prevent it from doing so), so I use Linux. Arch Linux 0.7.1 (using the e17-cvs desktop environment), to be specific. ;)

Oh, and darktemplar:
I'd rather unnecessary things be separate from the kernel. For example, Windows has the GUI tied in with the kernel, which is the cause of plenty of crashes that could've been fixed by a simple restart of the GUI. Also, the more things you have tied into the kernel, the easier it is for a harmful program to mess up your computer. :P

If you put much stuff into kernel, you get more performance. On the other hand - separating stuff from kernel results in serious performance penalties(read: time to switch into user mode of processor). I mean Windows can run some modules in kernel mode, and some in user mode. I think this is the best way =) I'm personally writing a kernel which runs *everything* in user mode =)

Well, stuff which is omnitested *shall* be run in kernel mode.

//I'd rather unnecessary things be separate from the kernel. For example, Windows has the GUI tied in with the kernel, which is the cause of plenty of crashes that could've been fixed by a simple restart of the GUI//

You say about Windows 9x? My XP never crashed because of GUI.

BTW: Does init(linux initialization process) restart X-Window if it crashes?

I beg to differ. I use Windows for everything and get the benefits of other Operating Systems ;)

init doesn't restart it, but whatever process started it in the first place (ex. gdm, kdm) does.

Supersonic Master wrote:I beg to differ. I use Windows for everything and get the benefits of other Operating Systems ;)

And does Windows have a decent command line? Nope, and the command line is a huge benefit. :) Not to mention all the free programs that do the exact same thing as all the costly programs Windows has.

Windows doesn't need a decent commandline, because it has decent GUI =)

But FAT filesystem is 'really' bad. It was designed to handle diskettes, not 20 GB hard disks.

I use Windows XP on my main computer, then there's Windows 95 on my wimpy laptop. I love all the Windows types.

All of the computers at my school that aren't in either of the two computer labs use a Macintosh OS. I hate Macs.

Yeah, it just is a sluggish stubborn mule that's complicated to the average un-educated civilaian... Trust me. You know about programming in both Linux and Windows, you'll one day hate it too.

Til then, it's all right... considering quite a lot of people use it.

Well, if Linux had supported my DWL-G650+ wireless card, I would have used it.

//ou know about programming in both Linux and Windows, you'll one day hate it too.//

Heh. I'm making now a portablity library(it channels all system-specific functions). I'll only need to change the library to use new OS/Pascal compilator. Compatiblity programming isn't something new =). It makes porting stuff easier. At the moment, I love it.

I'm stuck with Windows XP... but I don't use Explorer! 'course, that means I have no system tray... but I like the minimization better. I can stick a minimized window anywhere on the screen.

I have an ancient Macintosh at home... system 7, upgraded to 8.5.

The modern Macs are hardly outdated, though- OS X is actually derived from Unix, just like Linux- in fact, you can run all the standard *ix command line utilities from Terminal.

(I hate to be posting in an old topic, but I didn't want to create a repeat thread.)
My laptop came with Windows XP, which is what everyone uses for school. However, I'm one of the tech people who helps out with computer issues, and the one guy I work with runs Ubuntu Linux on his computer. So he's helping me to add it to my laptop. Soon I'll be running both.
Linux sounds like a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to using the command line interface and all that.

I am using MAC OS X because my other system is Win 98 *shudders*. I don't really prefer one system over the other. Windows has game support, MAC has fluid processing and more streamlined interface. Someday, I hope to become a full fledged geek and know all about MAC, Windows, and Linux programming. Sadly, that day is a long ways off.

Being honest, I run Mac, Windows XP - Vista - Server 2008 Beta 3, and Ubuntu. The mac is a Hackintosh. I have to admit it runs extremely well. But I have Problems with Vista but not Server nor XP Pro. Windows Stinks and Mac Rules!
