Question about Yumi and Ulrich - Season 3

Postby jbondsr » Fri Sep 15, 2006 9:34 am

I was reading the wikipedia about Code Lyoko, and under Season 3 it says that:

"Yumi has apparently decided against having a relationship with Ulrich, preferring to remain just friends."

I was wondering if this was true, and if so, what's the source?
Is this based on only one episode of season 3?
(I ask this because it seems like part of the conversation they had in the first ep of season 3 that was translated from french in these forums.)

well it seems to me that Yumi is unsure of her feelings and is not ready for a relationship, and Ulrch kind of put her on the spot and she said it to get him off her back. But thats only my theory.

This could've gone in the episode discussion. But yes, it seems it's true that Yumi told Ulrich just to be friends (let's hope just for now). And jbondsr, try creating a newbie thread. :)

Yumi's a teenager, she might not get this thing clear yet with Ulrich. She seems like the emotional type of girl. And I she would like to have some privacy with Ulrich, if she really loves him. But to deal with William, Sissi and now Hiroki would make things sorta messy.

...This will be the second time I'm gonna say this. Don't make me say it again.

The reason Yumi said no to Ulrich is because of her culture. She obviously grew up in Japan, and most kids her age aren't dealing with romance. She knows she has duties to fufill, such as getting through school WHILE fighting XANA, so she can't let something like a relationship distract her.

It's as simple as that. Maybe once they shut down XANA, they'll be getting somewhere, but for now, no.

I would argue that her decision was not solely or even majorly influenced by cultural standards. I'll admit that my knowledge of Japanese teenage culture is limited to Japanese anime and editorials by an American black man who spent the past 3-4 years as a Japanese middle school teacher in the same range of classes that Yumi would be in, but this runs kinda contradictory to the things he wrote. In most of his stories, he would write extensively about how, to put it lightly and as metaphorically as possible, how much they knew about themselves intimately and how what you described is not necessarily true. Of course, thats due to a 2nd-hand source, so thats to be taken with a grain of salt,

Second, even though she may have been raised partially as a child in Japan, she would of had to have been raised extensively in France to become so fluent in the language. If you've ever tried to learn a language before, it would take years of immersion to be able to understand and speak the language fluently, and she would have to be immersed in it from a very young age if she can speak without a noticeable accent (though I'm not sure how her accent is in French). So even though she is Japanese and potentially raised a decent deal there, she would of have to spent as great a deal of time or better in France. And when you're raised in another country, unless you're completely sheltered, you will be influenced. So I would doubt she would be in many ways, the traditional Japanese girl.

Last of all, she has been fighting XANA and jumbling Ulrich's feelings for atleast the past 2 years if not more and only recently decided to just be friends. That doesn't sound like something that was decided upon just because of culture. If it was decided solely or primarily base on culture, what was the past 2 years about? Her primary reason would have already been there and yet it took her 2 years. She obviously been thinking about this long and hard, so it would be more understandable to believe there are other possibly more important reasons for this step that took her a great deal of time to sort and realize.

To me, its just Yumi being Yumi, has little to do about culture and more to do about her sense of responsibility. She was the one most adamant about maing sure they weren't in over their heads in Big Bug. She is among the ones most often who elect to stay behind when real world dangers occur, and she feels guilty constantly lying to her parents about their adventurers. She is basically as idealistic as Jeremie or Aelita about their normal respective goals yet doesn't carry much of the outward emotional baggage (most of the time). She probably did this to protect Ulrich so we don't get more St. Valentine's Day, Routine, Swarming Attack, or The Key. She was just being herself, not the typical Japanese girl, just herself.

The point is...Yumi will be Yumi...Ulrich will be Ulrich...and with that said...the two of them figured that their personalities don't match as good as they thought it would, so they agree to just be friends.

But yeah right, you know Yumi just dumped Ulrich for that other guy with the black hair...Ulrich just got dumped...BIG TIME...I mean (haha)...IT WAS JUST A

BIG HUGE DUMPING!!

LOL! Haha!! :*D

:*D

Maybe not...that's for a comedy series...!

For more than 2 years...

...Ulrich and Yumi have been secret lovers...

...but now...

...in season 3...

...something changes...

Yumi: *on cell at school* I have something I need to say...

Ulrich: Meet me in the park...

Yumi & Ulrich: Let's just be friends...

Ulrich: *thinking* maybe next year...

Yumi: *thinking* Wow, that was easy...now Micheal's all mine!!

-

Ulrich, and the BIG HUGE DUMPING!!

Actually, Animenologist has the best reason, as it mirrors the one Yumi gives in the episode itself. I've been trying to translate that scene recently, and to me it sounds like one of the reason's Yumi gives is that they spend so much energy being jealous over each other because they don't know how the other feels (this isn't precisely what she says, but it is a paraphrase). She believes it'll be easier and less stressful if they just "remain friends".

I'm sure the fact that they have huge XANA issues now is another factor.

However, this does not, by any standard, mean they aren't still going to be "dancing around their feelings" and eachother. Just watch the latest episode, "Lyoko Moins 1" (located in it's respective Episode Discussion thread).

There's still fluff...and there's still feelings...and I believe they're still strong. ^.^

And, uh, no GivR...she hasn't "dumped" Ulrich for anyone, not even William. The episodes have clearly proven that statement to be untrue, as Yumi isn't hanging out with him anymore than she has before.

That's what it says at CodeLyoko.fr, "Yumi and Ulrich have decided to be JUST FRIENDS".

Actually, that's what Yumi has said to Ulrich...however, it was not because she wanted to go out with someone else, or even remotely because she's "dumping" him. In the actual episode she says she would like to remain friends because having a relationship right now would complicate things both in the fight against XANA and between the two of them. I believe she is doing this as a protective measure.

In any case, if you watch "Lyoko Moins 1" you'll see there's definitely still stuff going on between them. Yumi can say "they're just friends"...but her heart's definitely on another page. ;)

I think that Yumi's unsure wether she wants a relationship with Ulrich, but deep down, she probably likes him as more than a friend. *_*
