Job Hunting ^^

Postby adrimarie » Thu Nov 16, 2006 3:36 am

I know, in my newbie thread some of you suggested for me to post a rant about being unemployed. ^^

I've actually been unemployed for over a month now, living under UI claim (unemployment insurance - since I got laid off), and it's not until now that I started getting job interviews. Actually I've had one job interview in early November as an IT analyst at an automotive loan bank and they were doing background checks on me at this point. As far as background checks go, don't they normally take like about a week or so? It's been 3 WEEKS now and I haven't received ANY kind of confirmation from them to see if they'll give me an offer or not. In fact, I actually followed up w/ the HR rep who interviewed me last week and she told me that I'm still "in the process." Don't companies usually tell you if you didn't get the job or not? How long, or what's the average time, for a company to actually do background checks/drug tests on you?

I just had a job interview earlier today for an advertising/PR rep that could also lead me to doing (graphic/web) designing again (since design is a huge factor in the marketing/advertising industry) and I'll have another job interview tomorrow at a temp agency for a senior admin assistant or something like that. I kinda want the IT analyst job since it has better pay and it has all the responsibilities that I like, but I also like the advertising/PR rep too since I'll have experience on the "sales" side of advertising in conjunction w/ my designing background.

Right now, life totally sucks for me. I've got gazillion bills to pay with very little money (UI payment every 2 weeks doesn't do squat w/ bills, sadly x.x) and Christmas is coming up and I have *no money* to buy my family and friends presents. I'm getting poorer and poorer by the minute... x.x

For all of you serious job hunters out there--- how are you all doing w/ yours? ^^

I totally sympathize with you on the job hunting front. I graduated college in June and still do not have a job. I have at least an interview a week, but they take forever to get back to me with any news, and it's usually bad. Right now, I'm waiting on two different marketing/layout jobs to get back to me. It's irritating, frustrating, and makes me wish I'd gone ont o get a Masters rather than shuffle throught the job market for so long, dilluting my degree's importance. I say just stick with it; you will get results someday.

Thanks a lot. ^^; I wish you well too!

In regards for going for Masters, my old counselor from college advised me to find a job first, even if it's a measly entry-level admin/data entry job, because most Masters programs (especially if it's an MBA you're after) nowadays require you to have at least 2-3 years work experience (doesn't matter what kind of job, as long as you got work experience). I don't know, I think that depends on what you're going after. I'm actually planning to go for two Masters degrees (one for Project Management, another for Advertising/PR). I already got accepted for MBA Project Management, but since I'm unemployed right now (I'm hoping I'd get tuition reimbursement instead of going through financial aid again), I had to halt before I start classes again (I'm doing my classes online at home at night so I still have a fulltime job in the process).

But dang, this seriously sucks... I have another interview later today, wish me luck. :)

I totally sympathize with you. I got my masters last year in May and I had to volunaritly quit my first job because they kept adding duties that were not in my contract. I have been unemployed for about 9 months now. I have 3 applications out there so far.

Good luck with your interview.

JeremysGirl - 9 months?! Wow... that's a long time.... I heard that the average time that one would finally get hired for a job would be about 3-6 months. What kind of field are you looking for? 9 months is really long. Sometimes broadening up your options and start from the bottom (nowadays no matter how many Bachelor's or Master's degrees you're holding, everyone has to start from the bottom x.x) would help you find growth in finally landing a job that you wanted.

Virtualized STI - How long have you been looking for a job? Wish you luck! ^^

Speak of the devil, I actually got a message from the first employer that I had my job interview with (the one offering the IT analyst job) while I was having my interview at a temp agency earlier today (it went well by the way :) ) and I'm still in shock right now. I got the IT analyst job! ^^;; I start next week on Tuesday for Orientation (though I'll be working there for only 2 days because of Thanksgiving and all ^^). ^^

Okay... that was pointless of me ranting...LOL x.x

To everyone else, try to broaden up your options. Go online and post your resumes like in monster.com and careerbuilder.com and even craigslist.com. Attend job fairs (best way to go IMO... I found this employer offering the IT analyst job at a local job fair). Good luck! ^^

A year and a half? Wow.... o.o... that's a very long time. O.O... but more importantly, it's over. ^_^

I'll let you know how the orientation goes. I can't wait to go back to the workforce again. ^^; (though that would mean missing Code Lyoko episodes on TV... since I live in the West Coast they're shown at 1:30 pm... bah... x.x) Oh well--- order the DVDs... LOL. ^^

If I go back and get my Masters, that's one of the two fields I am considering. The other is education (social studies). And adrimarie, I hit up careerbuilder and craigslist every day. Monster.com sucks, though. I have applied to over 120 jobs, from bottom-feeder poistions to top-end dream jobs, over the last 4 1/2 months. I'm so glad to hear you got your big break in the job market. Congrats.

Thanks Stonecreek. ^_^

Have you tried attending local job fairs? For some particular reason job fairs (where you meet recruiters in person) seem to be a lot more effective than submitting your resumes. That's where I met this employer who was recruiting for IT analysts (as well as collectors and admin assistants). I like careerbuilder.com, I actually got a bunch of interview requests after having my resume distributed (though most of them are offering sales/advising jobs, which I'm not too much of a people person ^^).

Also, one more thing... when you look for a job, be sure you check to see if that employer also offers benefits (medical, dental, visual), 401k, tuition reimbursements (if you plan to go back to school, like taking Masters courses, for example, your employer can pay for your tuition), and all that. I made a mistake w/ my previous job (the one in which I got laid off from)--- they didn't have any benefits, no 401k, except for stock options/part-ownership of that company. Ah well. x.x

Lyoko Soldier - Have you tried going online to those job sites or asked around for help w/ your CV? You may want to try broadening up your options when you look for a job if you have other skills that may not be related to the job that you're looking for. You're planning to go to university after high school, correct?

Here is my plan

1.Find a job over chritmas prat time. (If i am with it i'll keep it till)
2.Finish my course(NVQ Food Preparation and Techiniques.)
3.Find a job for a few months .To rasiie my money levels.
4.Join the armed forces. Royal navy.

That's the plan .I got the right stiff for the job as people only really need a food hygeince Qualifications which is easy.People around as I said have got there job right a way when They start .I must be having some very very bad luck.

Going on online is great but I don't trust the intrenet. For me trust is hard to get (sometimes). My opctions are openned to anything But the one thing I do hate is sitt, stand around doing nothing .I got to keep myself active

Many of the job fairs I have gone to have the same employers, over and over again. Also, some of the jobs are way out of my range (aircraft mechanic? Me? Not in my lifetime). But they are helpful for getting your name out there, and the face-to-face interaction.

Benefits are one of the first things I look for. I don't care if a job's full or part time, as long as there's some insurance invovled. In fact, one of the jobs I'm still waiting to hear back from is a non-for-profit co. owned by a private university that's willing to give free tuition is I get the job. Currently, it's the best hope I have for a full-time job. On a part-time basbs, a trade publicationin south Kansas City is showing interest in my for a part-tinme editor position. I hope that pans out.

I worked at Toys R Us for a while. My boss said at the begining of the job "I'm here for you, if you ever need help I'll come."

Well Time goes by. I'm working in the Stockroom. I ask for some Guidence and well, I don't get any from him or any of the other employees. So I said, Screw it, and I quit.

Jobless at teh moment.

I worked in a factory that produces several types of recording technology. I got laid off after 9 months of spotless service for no other reason than my job somehow became unimportant. anyways. good to hear that you got a job L.S. and you too Osiris

I don't know what DB's opinion is, but it's hard as hell to get a job around here with no credentials. plus I have to go to school at night so I can oly take a day shift. Ive had to pass up 3 night shift jobs because of my schooling.
