Xana Awakens out of place?

Postby Darkness Incarnate » Thu Feb 22, 2007 9:48 am

I just got around to buying the season 1 dvd and was thinking that season 1 would have made more since if Xana Awakens was the first episode. When I first started to watch the show I did not even know what episode was the first one. And then they put it in season 3 I think its out of place.
P.S maybe this should be in E.D area but I thought this should be talked about in its own thread.

Of course, it's out of place! It's an OVA.

XANA Awakens isn't really an OVA (Original Video Animation) - if it were it would have been released solely on DVD and not aired on TV. It's a special episode that acts as a prequel, hence why it doesn't appear in the normal episode numbering scheme.

Unlike episode pairs like Code Earth and False Start, or Revelation and the Key, which have a continuing storyline but are written as standalone episodes, XANA Awakens is written and produced as one 44-minute episode aired in two parts, hence the 'Part I' and 'II'. Jerome told me that the episode can also be aired as a single special, so I guess Moonscoop have it on file somewhere in that format.

The reason why it isn't aired with S1 is because it wasn't written or made at the time - I personally think it works to have it air later - we care more about the characters and can appreciate their meeting on a more emotional level.

I'd also point out that many TV shows air their 'origin' episodes later as well.

Imagine if you will that XANA Awakens aired first - it would suck. The pacing is slow, there's no 'WOW!!' moment and its mostly exposition - Teddygozilla is far snappier and better as a pilot - XANA Awakens is better for people who are already familiar with the show. Heck it was probably written with that in mind.

I also feel that dropping us straight into the show rather than giving exposition on the characters, Lyoko and the supercomputer makes things far more mysterious and engaging.

I liked how Odd already was a self-proclaimed chick magnet, and that he fell in love with Sissi at first sight.

Even though I agree it should totally be in Season 1, I think it was a good idea for them to let us draw conclusions until it came out (I don't even think they even had an idea of what to do for that until S3).[/i]

I actually like how it fell into season three... because it left you quietly wonder how it had all come about for a whole two seasons before they tell you. It did some very good character development by showing you how the unlikely group had joined forces... It wouldn't have had the same effect had it been the first ever episode.

I completely agree, as well as the fact that Odd used his shield.

True... but it did remind me that he uses it in this episode, but then he doesnt constantly use it until late second season I think...

If I remember right its not at all used in the first season...

Because it is part of S3, it would have been more appropriate to tell the story in the form of flashbacks. As it is, I would place it right before "Teddygozilla" (No 'D').

I really feel they made a wise choice in airing it in season 3. Think of the two episodes of fillers we would've gotten otherwise!

I'm telling you, S3 was nothing more than a filler to promote the story to anoher level in season 4. If it wasn't for season 3, we'd just see no lyoko from season 2, and now william's running around crazy!

but a show can do horribly if it's dropped in right from the start. Most people don't care about the start... Imagine if Teen Titans Started out with the episode GO.m Can you imagine what it'd be like then? Would you want to watch it?

I see what you all mean but I still have to stay by my feeling on this that I would have liked to see how it started from the start. There was just to many things that I felt I needed to know about teh show that was told to me later. I do see that some shows are showing the middle first and then going back later but I feel by doing this you lose something. I am a person that is all about the story of a show the backround is very important to me. And as for the Teen Titans...wtf.

I dont think it was out of place.

It was funny seeing the char's different. Like Odd having his hair down. If we would have seen those eps first, well... We wouldn't have found his hair so cute. xD

I dunno, that's my only reason.
