Maybe I missed the point of the question.. as in why would mountains be purple? I've often wondered that myself...
Mountains occasionally look "purple" when seen at a distance. It might be an artistic pun in that sense. It might also be a subtle jab and/or homage to the phrase "for purple mountains majesty" as heard in "America the Beautiful". (Which incidently, is my favorite crayola crayon color ^^ ).
...Or it could just be that purple balanced out the rest of the color themes in the other regions (Green Forest Region, Orange Desert Region, Blue Polar Region, and then a Purple Mountain region...since red or yellow or pink would probably look weird for mountains and brown would look too much like orange with certain lighting ^^ ).
This'd be a good question for the set designers on the show.
I swear the ratings board are only doing that because they think a 12 is cool or something.
