Australian pub bars heterosexuals

Image
The hotel's ban is a first for Australia

A gay pub in the city of Melbourne has won the right to ban heterosexuals - the first time such legislation has been passed in Australia.

The Victorian state civil and administrative tribunal ruled the Peel Hotel could ban patrons based on their sexual orientation.

The pub's management said the move would stop groups of heterosexual men and women abusing gay people.

Civil liberties groups have supported the decision.

'Safe balance'

The tribunal's president said groups of straight women found homosexual men entertaining but that such attention was dehumanising, the BBC's Phil Mercer in Sydney says.

Managers complained raucous hen nights and stag parties created a poisonous atmosphere for its gay clientele, our correspondent says.

"If I can limit the number of heterosexuals entering the Peel, then that helps me keep the safe balance," the hotel's manager, Tom McFeely, told Australian radio, according to the Reuters news agency.

Mr McFeely says he wants a "safe balance"

He said while Melbourne had 2,000 venues catering for heterosexuals, his was the only bar aimed exclusively at gay men.

Civil liberties groups said homosexuals should be allowed to relax in places without fear of bullying or intimidation.

Australia's equal opportunity laws prevent discrimination based on race, religion or sexuality.

The "bars" thing is a typo from BBC, I just copied and pasted.

Those homos should learn to be more tolerant of our sexual orientation.

Why would a straight person go to a gay bar, anyways?

An interesting story you have here however being Australian I would be offended if people actually think one gay bar in melbourne reflects the entire country and its attitude. How did you find this story anyway, I haven't heard this in the news here.

I can understand where this article is coming from but honestly, I think you're taking it the wrong way, Rodri ^^; It's an issue of tolerance, but more on the part of the heteros and intolerance. It sounds like they've had a lot of problems in that bar before, and have been forced to take action. It's a drastic action, but it seems to have been the only choice.

Anyway, I just wanna remind you guys (as in any members reading this thread) that you should take the topic civilly too. If there's any fighting or nastiness sparked up, it will be locked. Hopefully, it can all be discussed perfectly okay, though. ^^

My thoughts exactly... o_o; Probably just for the fun of it, or they try pulling a My Name is Earl by bringing a gay friend to find someone.

Fair enough about the banning but... how the heck are they going to know if you're gay or not?! They can't just go asking 'are you gay?' everywhere or something.

...

*snickers at 'Mr McFeely'* Quite suitable for a gay pub owner... hurrhurrhu*brick'd*

I heard this on the BBC Radio a couple of nights ago. The reason that the clients of the bar wanted this ban on heterosexuals at the bar was that they felt like they were in a zoo. Apparently, straight women had been throwing parties at this particualr bar just for the purpose of watching gay men interact, because they thought it was amusing and cute. The bar's patrons felt like creatures behind a glass display, and requested that the owner sdo something about it.

As for being able to tell if the person's gay or not...the bar caters to a gay clientele. The ones that would stick out there would be the straight people gawking at the gay couples.

Not to mention that I imagine the bar's got a pretty steady clientèle. Any unfamiliar faces might be immediately suspect.

I'd advise you hold your tongue, Rodri, or you'll regret it. Be careful of what you say. I'm really touchy about things like this.

Fair warning~ :D

Otherwise I don't really have a comment. People are retarded everywhere. Australia's no different. We have the same kinds of problems here.

I must say I feel bad for them having to take a measure like that, though.

Really? Because, I don't think I've ever seen a gay person beat up a straight person just because they were straight. Like YDV said, Rodri, you need to watch your tongue because there are gay people on this board, believe it or not. (Really?! Gay people on the internet??)

Why would a straight person go to a gay bar, anyways?

As stated before: Straight girls just go to watch gay guys make out, hatefests from straight people... The list goes on.

...We really need to take a class on sarcastic humor and witty banters. His line made me chuckle; coming from Mr. Deadpan, that's probably saying something.

/Ben Stein.

Anyways, it's not a big deal, really. It's pitiful people choose to bash LGBTs, and it's sad that they have to resort to something like this, but oh well, what can you do? There really shouldn't be a need to do this, and yet people find ways to screw up, so I don't blame them for taking these precautions.

More power to them, I guess.

I love sarcasm and wit, but unfortunately those two don't translate well over the internet, especially when it's plain text-based and without the help of emoticons or icons to go with them. And his line didn't make me chuckle.

I read in the newspaper that the pub was trying to create an atmosphere that would make the gays feel like they could interact with each other without feeling uncomfortable. It also said ladies were booking hen's nights (ladies only nights) there and using the gays for entertainment. I can understand why the ban was put in place but I don't know why it had to make world news.

I'm not saying anyone's going to lose sleep, I'm just saying you could possibly make a bunch of people very angry, and that's going to be nothing but trouble for you. But basically you're saying you don't have a concern about what you say, so the point is moot.
