My family owns a small one-shop pet business, and recently we've had some trouble with robbers.
The first incident occured in february when my parents saw one of their own employees disable one of our security cameras.
Two months later, we caught two parents manipulating their daughter and got her to steal a bunny.
3 weeks ago, two people came in, bought a ferret, and then bounced a check on a closed account(wich by the way is fraud!)

We caught the bunny snatchers but somehow they ended up getting off with a slap on the wrist.
I'm not sure what's being done about the ferret though.(The check was written for over $200)

My parents own a small business, so I've heard a lot of stories about these sorts of things. When they first opened (I think I was 17), they were really trusting and helping to people, but people took advantage of that.

Unforunately some people are super sneaky..... I would suggest not accepting personal checks anymore. A lot of businesses I've seen nowadays don't accept check, either cash only or cash/credit/debit card. Also instead of having very obvious cameras, you could hide the camers throughout your store. Are there any 'do not steal/you're being watched' kind of signs in your store? I know it seems kind of obvious, but it might deter some theives... If you have a lot of high priced rare animals in your store, you could get an alarm system too.

We have an alarm system, and after the ferret incident, my parents have actually decided to stop taking checks. We actually did contact the news when the bunny was stolen, if I can find the video I might post it.

Yeah, I don't like it when people rob stores via checks. The thing to do is to be suspicious of the people having checks and if the kid is very sneaky. I don't like crime whatsoever.

But seriously, even in the US you could face serious legal trouble for killing someone in self defense. Especially if they were only there to steal stuff, and not planning on killing you.

Many places nowadays either do EFTs immediately with the check in hand, or simply refuse to accept anything other than a local check they can verify.

Well that really sucks! I feel very bad and why would the kids parents make the little girl steel a bunny rabbit? Thats wrong. So then get securitly and have you reported to the police about this because they will do an investigation and they will maybe find their fingerprints and track them down and let justice do it's thing.
