Laptop is Being Nuked

Postby Reesane » Sun Aug 05, 2007 10:19 am

On wendsday, I caught the mother of all viruses. My lap top is totaly trashed. ;__;

Effin winfix viruse. It instaled itself on my computer, then imbedded itsekf into varuse vital parts of the computer, including the startup programs. Thus, my laptop will be out of comision for at least three weaks.

So if you don't see me for a while, that's why.

@Topic name: No it isn't. *hides remote controller behind her back*

I need to get some Auntie V software software for this laptop actually. o.0 It doesn't even have a FIREWALL. >_>;;

Aaand yeah I've never heard of Winfix. *Wiki's it*

EDIT: Ohh, THAT'S Winfix. I get those prompts rarely nowadays. I got into the habit of turning the PC off and on again instead of clicking X/cancel (thank God) because I had a feeling something bad would happen either way. Guess I'll disconnect the internet next time it happens. xP Hope it gets fixed up, Reesane.

One way to avoid WinFix: don't use IE for browsing the web.

install SmitFraud.exe, start it up in safe mode, and press Q to start system scan, and Y to clean your registry for unwanted residue. Always works for me. Even when I got *gasp!* Security Toolbar 7.1 *runs in closet* find my happy place, find my happy-- Oh! that wasn't there yesterday... :D

We tried. The infection had taken over IE itself and blocked that site, as well as most of the other anti viruse sites.

I wanted to download FireFox, but I never got around to it. :arg:

Bugger, I am sorry to hear about your computer... I should tell my dad that the anti virus program here at home has expired, luckily my laptop is protected at school with two different thinks Mcaffey and Cisco Clean Access... But I know how you feel I had that happen once and it almost trashed my computer as well although it was a different virus..

That's bollocks. It's a good thing I have a Mac or I would probably have the same problem three times over. This website has info on how to remove it yourself http://www.spyany.com/program/article_a ... _2005.html and a simple google search on winfixer will bring up plenty of spyware removal software to fix it. Of course that's if it will start up in the first place. Sorry about the hard lines you've run into.

P.S. Everyone watch out for those "you've received an e-card from a ________" messages. If you link to the URL it will do a drive by download of trojan malware to hijack your compy and integrate it into a botnet. Slows your computer down to a halt by sending out thousands of spam emails a minute.

We tried that site. I had the latest version, so the files to remove wern't on the list. What realy sucks is that it incorperated some of its coding into my browser, rendering it imposible to remove.

Nuke CD arived yesterday, so I should have Arthur (my laptop) back by the end of the weak. I've done the resurch, and decided to install a new web browser because IE has terrable sucurety. Plus it sucks.

Reesane, once you get your laptop back up and running and cleared/clean, may I suggest looking into a program called STOPzilla? Along with being a popup stopper, it also stops spyware and adware from downloading, and also prevents botnet attacks, kills browser hijackers, and just in general protects your computer from the things that crawl out of the seedy underbelly of the internet. It's what I use; I've had this particular computer since 2005, and it's yet to let me down. It's not the only thing I've got, mind (I've also got Ad-Aware and Spybot) but it works very well.

What, STOPzilla? No, it's not, but to my recollection it's only $20.
