If there's already a thread like this, it probably long dead. Sooooo...

I noticed there was a 'current listening' thread. I noticed there was a 'current lyrics' thread. But there was no thread alive that actually discussed music itself.

So...what bands do you like? Not like? Certain styles? Or something?

I'm tolerant of pretty much anything except really old blues, cause it's slow and uninteresting, and rap, because they all follow a basic, dumb formula. (Modern rap, anyway. Old school rap, like MC Hammer and Sir Mix-A-Lot, is funny. :D) I especially like German music (bands like Rammstein, L'Ame Immortelle, OOMPH!, Nevada Tan) and any techno/dance I can get my hands on. :D

You?

I don't listen to music frequently, and I'm not that exposed to various genres, but, for now, I'd say my interests lie mainly in Independence Rock, Alternative Rock, certain odes, and the occasional metal that isn't exactly scream-your-head-off. To name a few bands: KoЯn, Seether, Linkin Park, Guano Apes, a bit of Mudvayne, and, in the past, Evanescence, though they've kind of jumped shark as of late.

I find myself listening to video game soundtracks more than actual music, though. I'm especially fond of Akira Yamaoka--most of his music is instrumentals, but a vast majority of them are addictive. Mary Elizabeth McGlynn usually provides the vocals for certain songs that call for her, and I absolutely love her voice. I don't think I've found any female voice that can match up to hers. It's a bit raspy like P.J. Harvey, but also soothing and calm, and she can convey a lot of emotion.

...Yeah, that's about it. I'm not terribly enthusiastic about music, so I don't think I can offer a whole lot of discussion.

Alternative rock, American Primitism, Classic Rock, and avant-garde/experimental/musique concrete are good. Today's rap, like Soulja Boy and D4L, sucks. Yesterday's, like NWA, 2 Live Crew, Dr. Dre, and Tupac are outstanding.

I like dc Talk, Relient K, and Third Day as much.

Will alt-rock get a leg up in the future?

It's a shame that today's music is being negatively affected by the loudness war. Simply put, record companies are ripping us off by selling CDs that trade sound quality for loudness, because it's their belief that a loud CD will create more of an impact in a new listener, thus raising the chances of a purchase. I dunno... it's a big problem that's worth mentioning.

But to make my post a little less gloomy, I'll mention some of my favorite artists: Red Hot Chili Peppers (I also listen to John Frusciante's solo work) , Radiohead, R.E.M., Talking Heads, Can, Kraftwerk, The Germs, Jane's Addiction, The Beatles, Depeche Mode, The Beach Boys, P-Funk, Foo Fighters, Jimi Hendrix, Björk, among others.

The loudness war? Huh. Never heard of it o.O *makes mental note to read the article*

As for my favorite types of music, various sorts of rock come to mind. If it's got good guitaring, consider me hooked. I also like songs that have meanings. My favorite bands/singers are all over the place though, just proving how much different music I listen to xD Avenged Sevenfold, Fall Out Boy, Eiffel 65, Backstreet Boys *runs*, Simple Plan, Sum 41, a little Eminem (at least, older stuff), 3 Doors Down, and Gorillaz are all up there on my favorites. I've also got different songs from other musicians, like Lazlo Bane, Remy Zero, Self, and Sarah Mclachlan, among other assortments. Oh, and I also ADORE absolutely anything by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

And of course, the Subdigitals ;P xDD

Music is my main vice in life. I own over 200 CDs, and close to 5,000 MP3s on two computers. To list my favorite bands would take forever, but I'll give a short list:

Brand New, The Mars Volta, Tool, Bloc Party, Live, Tori Amos, Muse, Greenwheel, and Axium and the Sound and the Fury (two defunct KC-area bands).

As for genres, I lothe the state of country now-a-days, though in the early 90s it was the soundtrack to my life. Par never appealed to me, and hip-op has few songs worth listening to. Other than that, I'm open to pretty much anything, including foriegn music (be it Japan, Russia, or Mexico or whatever).

I also am currently enjoying Puddle Of Mudd and The Exies.

Yeah, it's awesome!

I also like the little music that pops up in Metroid Prime whenever you unlock a secret passageway.

And I like the music that comes whenever you return from saving your game.

Oh, and I read some reviews for some All Music Guide-loved albums, except for Group X (which has a 5-star rating. Good job, Hashmeer.)

Rush has some 1-star reviews, thanks to Geddy Lee's "annoying voice".

Limp Bizkit has a bunch of 1-star reviews, due to the mediocrity of the music. I think it's okay, but they can get stereotypical.

Silverchair has some 1-star reviews because of "Israel's Son" and its slow, slow beginning.

Pavement has 1-star reviews because at times, the music is weird and Stephen Malkmus "sounds like Les Claypool and Primus".

Captain Beefheart has a lot of 1-star reviews because of his music, duh!

I don't like those people.
