I don't know much about autism, but in many cases, people who suffer from autism tend to be very, very smart. For example, Bill Gates has autism. Also, there was this guy who had slight autism who was able to speak Icelandic fluently one week after he started learning the language. I don't know about myself, but I used to show a few symptoms of autism, for example being obsessed in things what were lined up and not being able to express myself, but I have an IQ of 147, which isn't low.

So, my point is, people make stupid, uninformed stereotypes on stuff because they don't know about it. You're just special, nothing more. So what if you have autism? I know it's extremely frustrating to hear people make fun of you based on things that aren't true, and it's even more frustrating when you try to explain yourself but they don't take you seriously, but someday, when you take your ACT's or SAT's or whatever, study hard, and you'll be able to prove that you can be just as smart as all of them (if not smarter) even if you have autism. (Unless, of course, you do badly on the test.)

Yeah, when they say stuff like that to me, I don't even bother to respond. It's not worth it. ;)

He's very withdrawn, and doesn't deal well with large noises or lots of people. However, over the past few years, in the few times a year I've seen him, he's always said hi to me, (with my name. He doesn't do that for anyone...) And always says goodbye to me when I go back home. On top of that, he's a genius with computers and videogames, and is able to change controls, from joystick to keyboard to controller very easily, and seamlessly. On top of that, over the past few years, he's developed on his own, to the point where he has a weak form of autism.

But I really think it needs to be expanded out on more. It's not really all that understood yet.

That sounds like Asperger's to me. Viva la supergeniuses!

Malky wrote:As you may or may not know, I have what is know as an autistic spectrum disorder, a form of autism that contains Asperger's, which I am one of the sufferers. I don't like it when people call me dumb or stupid because they have seen low-IQ autistic people...and I don't like it when people tend to relate to me as "mentally retarded"! I am not! I have a friggin' IQ of 130 (106 on a Web test) and I excel with probably one failing grade in my classes!

That's all...now, who else is autistic here?

I am officially diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyper Activity Disorder), as well as Ausperger's Syndrome, I have been medicated for it since I was in first grade. I have been taking medicine my whole life for this. Yes it is hard to deal with sometimes. It is hard to concentrate, also depending on the medication you can have problems, I for instance am not as tall as I should be I am actually two inches shorter then I should be because one of the medications that I used to take Dexadrine caused me to drop of the weight and growth chart. So some medicines can be rather dangerous if not properly understood. I am now two inches shorter then I should have been I am 5'2". I sympathize with you though, sometimes this condition makes me feel diffrent from others; and people who notice do not always understand and because of their ignorance they make fun of what they do not know. But I understand how you feel, however you can succeed you just have to work harder at things I should know, Auspergers is a mild form of autism yet I have managed to pull through and succeed I am currently attending college and I am a senior with a GPA of 3.69. I am currently taking abnormal psychology and it has helped me to understand it. I also advise you to not trust these on the web IQ tests, they are not always accurate, don't trust them. Pm me if you have any questions or if you would just like to talk, I would love to help.

Yes there are many people who are you would just sometimes not notice due to medications and other forms of treatment. It also really hurts when your friends tell other people about it when you never gave them consent to do so, believe me I have had it happen. It was actually here that a friend of mine announced that I had ADHD. I am glad now that it was here and not somewhere else. But to tell the truth I felt like I had been slightly betrayed, the first time I read what she had wrote I felt like she had betrayed my trust, however when I addressed her about it she appoligized. There will be those people who do not understand and will talk about you but you must not take it to heart. These are the challanges destiny and fate have laid before us, and they can do one of two things. These challanges can either destroy you completely if you let them; or they can give you a strength and and a determination that you never knew you had. But that decision is up to you, no one else can choose it for you, you alone must make the choice.

I'm certifiably autistic; I have ADHD and Aspergers Syndrome. I just did a paper on Aspergers Syndrome and how it affects my life for a college admitance essay. If you guys want, I can post a copy up here.

I've had an aide to help keep me focused since I was in first grade, and I've been medicated since before I can remember. It's kid of easy to tell when I'm not medicated, especially to me, because I feel wide awake (physically) but about to fall asleep (mentally).

I am really smart (I have a 32 on my ACT), and there are lots of super-awesome people who are autistic. The people on this forum who are autistic, Me, Albert Einstein, Bill gates, and me.

So...many...autistics.

Thank God everything has come a long way since Raymond Babbit in "Rain Man"...

"Gotta watch Wapner! Gotta watch Wapner!"

"Look, this is my brother and if he doesn't see Wapner in the next minute, he's gonna throw a fit on your porch. You want to witness in horror or are you going to let us in and watch it?"

Well, unfortunately, like most things, when people think of mental disorders (such as Autism,) the first thing that comes to mind is the worst.

For example, after sept. 11, muslims were highly discriminated against and disliked because everyone associated that particular religion with the murder of over three thousand people.

It's the same with Autism. There are a few HEAVILY autistic kids in my school, and they're kinda scary. One's name is Austin. He's always drooling and breathing loudly, his eyes are always crossed and he's pretty weak and small. People think of that when they think of Autism, not knowing that there are a bunch of different types of autism, and different degrees of the different branches.

I mean, look at me. I have it, but if you knew me, you wouldn't know it.

Though as you can see from my sig, some of my symptoms are obvious.

I believe what she means is that she has mild autism, where an individual has a higher form of functioning which means that they are not totally disabled by autism.

That's correct. But even so, regardless, I was picked on. But some people that are normally bullies actually protected me.

When don't bullies pick on someone who is different?

Well, they do pick on those who are different. And given that each person is unique, and thusly different, then what choice do they have? But I know what you're trying to say, and the reason is because it makes them feel better about themselves. It gives them a sense of power and superiority. "Ha ha, I'm better than you!" And who doesn't like that feeling, somewhere in their body? The thrill of victory and that rush of superiority that you feel after a win?

Besides, it's a strength in numbers kinda thing. If they picked on the masses, then they could rise up and destroy them easily.

I think of it in terms of strategy games. in the game Homeworld II, there's a type of ship called the Flak Frigate, which is super-effective at destroying fighters. Bombers are a type of fighter. If you were to send a single squadron of bombers to destroy a flak frigate, you'd get annihilated. But send a dozen squadrons, and the frigate is destroyed with minimal losses.

Now, just replace the frigate with the bully, and the bomber with a potential bullying target.
