Really?

I'm more of a McCain supprter (Republicans rule!), and I really despise Barack Obama becuase of his views and his recent controversies.

What's racist about this?

Or is this a case of "defend te messenger. not the message"?

Or is it because she's refering to Jeremiah Wright?

JF is right... depending upon my understanding of sepratism, that being a black view that segragations and fair but equal should exist.

So, let me get this straight. Let's say, I want to run for president. People will despise me because I did volunteer work and/or support human rights causes for Asians in this country in the past?
That makes absolutely no sense. What the people I know dislike about Obama is either his POLITICAL VIEWS (let me say this again. POLITICAL VIEWS POLITICAL VIEWS POLITICAL VIEWS) or hi inexperience. Sometimes both.

That being said, what Obama's FORMER pastor have stated and such has nothing to do with Obama as a person and as a candidate. Obama's past involvement with organizations and causes that are sponsored and/or supported by blacks and/or black separatists has nothing to do with him being a person and a candidate. He simply stands for what he believes in, but that doesn't mean he's going to bring all that to the table for his campaign.
20 years...Wright was Obama's pastor for twenty years. listen to the DVDs of the sermon. The portion the media highlights was/is not an individual incident. That's like going to a Tinfoil Hat Society for twenty years, but when its highlighted you do, you pretend what was said was a single incident.

Don't forget, there are still a lot of whites around the country who still discriminate against non-white races. Minority races struggle more when it comes to opportunity than whites do in general. Minorities can't help it but fight in order to have that equal opportunity. What Taelia said gave me a feeling that this was all going to fall down in to racial issues once again. A non-white running for president... it's always coming down to race issues. Always happens.
By "discrimination", I hope you don't mean "Equal Opporitunity instead of Affirmative Action" but, I agree with everything but th last few sentences. As I said before, "defend the messenger. not the message" Afte all, it worked so well with the Jersey Girls...

I don't know who I'll be voting for come the elections. I'm pretty much a liberal Democrat, but it looks like Obama will be the one on the ballot and I really stopped trusting him since that whole Reverend Wright fiasco. McCain seems all right as far as I can tell, but I only agree with the Republican agenda on gun control, for the most part, so I don't know if a vote for him will really be the best I can do for myself. Personally, I don't have a big problem with Hillary. If she miraculously wins and becomes the Democratic nominee, I'll vote for her. If not, I'll have to do an awful lot of thinking.

Well, as I recall, this is the thread for the 08 US Presidential Election. I have decided to bump it. What with the election in exactly one day less than two months, I figure at least a few people here will want to discuss it.

The conventions are now over, and the official tickets stand as thus:

United States Democratic Party:
Nominee for President: Senator Barack Obama of Illinois
Nominee for Vice President: Senator Joe Biden of Delaware

United States Republican Party:
Nominee for President: Senator John McCain of Arizona
Nominee for Vice President: Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska

Green Party of the United States:
Nominee for President: Cynthia McKinney of Georgia
Nominee for Vice President: Rosa Clemente of New York

Libertarian Party:
Nominee for President: Bob Barr of Georgia
Nominee for Vice President: Wayne Allen Root of Nevada

Constitution Party:
Nominee for President: The Rev. Chuck Baldwin of Florida
Nominee for Vice President: Darrell Castle of Tennessee

Ralph Nader, of Connecticut is running as an independent. His running mate is Matt Gonzales of California.

So, did anyone watch any of the speeches, especially those of Barack Obama and/or John McCain? If so, what are your opinions? And does anyone else think that it's kinda wrong for a pastor to be running for President?

Depends on whether he's currently practicing. I'm more concerned about a lawyer running for President... ;)

I need to work out how to get an absentee ballot...

Reverend Baldwin is currently a pastor at a baptist church in Pensacola, Florida. And, hey, Abraham Lincoln was a lawyer. And I think there have been a few others, but I can't name them off the top of my head.

As for the absentee ballot thing, I'd try contacting your state's Secretary of State or whatever agency is responsible for ballots and such. Perhaps applications are available online or through the mail.

Well, so some theorize; personally, I'd say I'm at least 8th on the list. But I invite consideration for the Department of Energy.

According to recent polls on AOL, McCain's leading Obama by several points. Maybe it's because the RNC went swimmingly. :)

Though Oprah's not.

I watched her speech, and I have to admit, Governor Palin has not just sharp tongued wit but fork tongued wit. And I will say that I did laugh at her joke- "What's the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull? Lipstick."

Tangent128 wrote:Probably a lot of people are intrigued by Palin.

The sad thing is that several people I know are intrigued about Governor Palin only because of her looks. I asked some people in class "Did any of you watch Sarah Palin's speech?" And the responses were all pretty much the same: "Dude, she is so hot." If you want to support a candidate, support them for their stance on issues. Not on their gender or race or "attractiveness".

Also, Rudy Guliani's speech was almost more of a comedy routine. Somehow, the fact that Barack Obama's story can happen "only in America" is funny. When he said that, he said that in a joking tone of voice, and many people in the audience laughed. Since when is the American Dream funny?

Palin won me over with her speech. And I enjoyed the most was listening to Letterman eat his words the day after her speech. XD But the attacks on her personal life is ridiculous.

It's funny. After seeing the speeches, people say that they're more into the election now than ever.

After I had to read over what they said in their speeches and highlight some points for my History class, the last thing I want to do is anything relevant to the elections (then why am I posting here hur hur).

I suppose you could say my viewpoints are liberal, but in all honesty, I prefer to remain apathetic about voting on most issues, due to most of the issues, I believe I would need more information in order to take a standpoint on.

I, personally, felt like I saw bashing of the other party from speeches on both the Democratic side, and Republican side, which is what made me want more disconnection from the election after seeing it.

My vote would be for <S>your mom</S> a fictional character, most likely, due to a lack of faith in the human race, if I was able to vote.

I've decided. I'm voting Obama.

If McCain wins I'll be in constant fear of having to go to war with another country that isn't a threat to us.

Since when was it not? Laughing about the American Dream is not mocking it.

Oh, and Palin's probably the most attractive politician of this generation....seriously, our other options are Hillary and people who look like Nancy Pelosi....http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SoYeah

The media has found its perfect target: a 17 year old unwed mother. Ack.

What I think most Republicans miss about Pregnancy rates is the fact that these girls aren't injecting salt into their fetuses or suckin' their brain out...this is due to Juno (The one Miss Palin didn't run) more than anything, methinks.

And....finally....

Yeah...you think he'll try something like Iraq after Bush? Um....no.

So....um, yeah.

I saw part of it...
McCain doesn't have any clue what he's talking about when it comes to foreign policy. And when they were talking about healthcare in the beginning, why did the energy bill come up? What does that have to do with healthcare?

Unfortunatly my Tivo didn't record it :( and I was at work till midnight, so I'll have to rely on the newspaper at work tonight.

Anyway, to answer you question JF, no I do not trust McCain to not do something like Iraq after Bush. Have you seen the way he's talked about Russia after they merely tried to keep control over their own property?

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with you there sir. McCain knows that putting people in a tropical prison away from America is not a good thing (Guantanamo). He knows the difference between legitimizing rouge dictatorships by talking and arms disagreements.

another thing: Russia. not good. Trying to take over Georgia. Bleh.

In the NY area, Time Warner has some channel called Elections 08 on Demand. I think its channel 1279.
And, of course, people MUST have put stuff up on YouTube by now.
