SIXTH Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy book coming

Postby Lyoko Wario » Sun Sep 21, 2008 2:48 pm

Don't Panic!

It's true. Eoin Colfer, author of the Artemis Fowl series of children's fantasy novels, has been given the opportunity to continue the legendary sci-fi cult series The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. The matter was (unexpectedly) presented to him by the original author's widow, Jane Belson, and news of his agreement hit the internet a couple of days ago. The new book will be called "And One More Thing" and is due to hit the bookstores October next year.

I have never read Colfer's work, and I do feel ever so slightly uncomfortable with the idea of having someone other than the legendary Adams work with this world and these characters, but I also trust that Belson and the People in Charge thought this over very carefully and did not give this wondrous opportunity to just any hack. I can't wait to see what the book turns out like, and I am fascinated by the idea of more books beyond a sixth.

Well, let's all keep our towels handy...

Personally he's not the guy I would have picked, he's good its just his style is so different. But then again most of the guys I'd have liked to see do it are either dead or just plain wouldn't.

In my humble opinion, the best writer to finish the job would have been Jasper Fforde.

As I hear it, Terry Pratchett might also have done a good job.

Well, most sites that carry the story seem to imply that Marvin the robot will be back, even though he was killed off (in the nicest, most poetic way imaginable) at the end of the fourth book. Whether his reappearance can be described as "happy" is very debatable, though! And, seeing that Colfer and Belson have specifically mentioned Arthur and Ford, I think it's pretty safe to assume that things are looking up for those characters, considering the state they were in when we last caught up with them... though I guess the possibility exists of Colfer doing something even worse to them, but chances are slim, I'd say. Besides, it also seems that the series will "continue" rather than "be finished with this one," so really, only time will tell...
