Unused location, the Dam

Postby Gadget » Thu Jun 25, 2009 3:28 am

I am sorry if this is old news, but I while back when season 4 was still underway, Lyoko Freak started asking its users to type some stuff for its home page. Well I was researching some stuff to type about the replicas, and while researching I found some guy named Frederic Perrin’s website. I started going threw it and found lots of really high quality pictures of Places on code Lyoko, Specifically replicas. Started to look threw them and I saved copies of all the pictures on the site.

I found a picture, with the group of pictures of code Lyoko, of a large dam. Now I have had the picture for ever, and didn’t think anything of it. Until a friend over the internet told me he never heard of this unused location. Until that time I thought it was common knowledge. Well here’s the picture I found all that time ago.

For now I will just upload only the picture of the dam, but at request I will upload all the pictures I got off the website.

I did look around on Lyoko Freak before I posted this, and I don’t think anyone has talked about this yet. BUT if it is old news, then I apologize and you can lock this topic.

I saw it while researching photos for an art project (I made a CD cover and label for the remixes of Kikou), and thought it was rather intriguing. Haven't really thought about it recently, but it still is interesting.
I really gotta fix up this theme

That's awesome. If they ever do Season 5, I'd love to see this used.

IIRC, Frederic Perrin was the background artist as well as one of the concept artists. He does have an online portfolio website with a lot of the background work he did for CL on it, but since you didn't link the original website, I don't know if it's the same one.

At any rate, as with all productions, only about 25% of what's created for an episode actually makes it into the finished product. Unused backgrounds happen all the time, and that may very well have been just concept background art for an episode like "The Lake" or something that ended up not being used.

Like I said though, without the original website its hard to tell if this was even intended for CL at all. It may have just been another piece in his portfolio.

Hmm ok. :D

It was long ago, so I kind of had to retrace my steps. But I managed to dig up the old address.

Sorry didn’t think of that before, well that’s the gallery, go threw it, I like the pictures so much I made one of them my background for my computer.

EDIT: ha-ha after going threw the website again. I found a second code Lyoko gallery on there. Including a picture that was never used in code Lyoko. It’s a neat picture. I don’t know where the location is. It could be anywhere but there’s no way to tell. It could have been inside the dam, or inside the factory, or just another random location. Well here’s the picture.

I do wonder...

You see, while it is an awesome drawing, and it does have Fred's name on it - is it really a background, or just concept art

If it is a background, then running water would have to be animated going over the waterfall in the foreground, and possibly down the spillway, and synching that with any motion of the drawing seems overtly complex to me

Still, it is interesting to muse...

Yep. That's definitely the same portfolio website I visited a while back, albeit a tad bit updated.

Also, I'm not 100% sure, but wasn't that other background you linked used in one of the Replika episodes? I think that's an interior shot from the Amazon lab. Could be wrong though.

That's why I was leaning more towards concept art in my post, especially for backgrounds like the dam. If you look closely at the way that landscape is drawn, you can also see that, were animated characters intended to be laid over it, they would either be at a very strange angle, or it would be an extreme wide-shot, depending on where they were set. A very unusual shot for animating. Granted not an impossible one, but definitely unusual. ^^;

To me it looks definitely like an unused idea for an episode. There wasn't eventually Mountain Replika, so I guess it might have something to do with it.
Anyway, I smell an inspiration for fanfiction... *thinks what XANA would like to screw up using a dam*
And that interior... it appears in "End of Take" during the scene in James Finson's movie:
