The first thing I did when I read this was laugh until I fell out of my seat. At least I would've liked to fall out of my seat. First, at the stupidity of these French kids. Texting in class, yeah, but answering a call? You know that's a one-way ticket to thing like this, mes amis.

Two, there is no way this is going to work. In the grand tradition of overconfident teenagers, this will deter no one that's really that determined to not pay attention in class. And if it's a federal law, what will be the penalties? It'll basically turn a generation of kids into criminals for no good reason. As much as I'd like kids to be able to understand why they have to pay attention in class, the fact that I'm writing this when I should be doing my Lit paper just disproves whatever point I was trying to make.

Third, it will bring about the end of the world as we know it because the Lyoko Warriors won't be able to keep in touch in the event of a XANA attack. But then again, timeline-wise they're probably in college and done with it by now...

LOL

This is just the same thing teachers have been saying rebranded by the french gov't. Teens are still going to do it, except the extreme law abiding crowd.

Honestly, there shouldn't be jail time for druggies, just huge-as-halibut fines.

This will have a tremendous effect on children's personal safety.

You mean they haven't been banned already, I could have sworn Kadic had a 'no cell phones on school grounds' policy that no one listened to, I must need to rewatch code lyoko some more. But seriously, I know where I live it's a state law we can't have them, most don't text in class, but your not even supposed to have them with you, in your backpack or in your locker.

No one will probably turn a teenager into the government for having a cell phone, it'll probably just be a detention or something. Hopefully for them at least.

Whats really f*cked up is that when your in the school system, as a child, they treat you like a lesser citizen. Even if you happen to be 18 and still in highschool.

Very true. Cell phones can do more than just text message. They're also for if you need a ride after school, or if you've been horribly injured and need an ambulance.

Well, as a child, you are a lesser citizen. It sounds harsh, but minors have fewer rights than adults. That's just how it works. Minors have fewer rights than adults do, and such rights are subject to legislation. Any state could pass a law saying you have to be 18 or older to be outside past 10:00, or be 21 to drive, or anything. And why is that? Because you aren't born with all the capacity and responsibility to completely function in the outside world. Obviously we can't have six year olds running around with concealed weapons, or 10 year olds voting. And I'm sure you realize all this. (This may put us on the track of debating about such things as the age of majority and/or age of consent laws. If this is something you are passionate about, and wish to debate, I recommend it be done in a different thread.)

When you're at school, the school is responsible for you. Teachers and administration act as representatives of the State in its role of keeping you safe while you are under its protection. Sounds rather Orwellian, I know. But it's called in loco parentis- when you're at school, the teachers and administration have the same authority as and act in place of your parents.

The thing about being 18 and being treated the same way is slightly different. At least at my school, once you're 18 and you fill out the paperwork, you can sign your own permission slips and such, and sign yourself out of school. Once you're 18, the school can't "keep" you in there. However- and I don't know if this has any legal basis or Latin words- they still have authority over you. It's a different kind of authority, stemming from the fact that you voluntarily enrolled in the school. (If it wasn't voluntarily I imagine you would have left.) You made the decision that you needed to be in that school, and you are using that school's educational resources, and to do so you accept that the administration and teachers of the school have authority over you, within the limits of the law. Once you're 18, you are perfectly able to hire a lawyer and sue the school if you feel your rights are being violated. And while I'm no Constitutional lawyer, I do know that Freedom of Speech/Expression does not apply to speech/expression that disrupts the education of other students*, or is not in line with the school's "educational mission".**

Yeah... but the thing about Code Lyoko is that, technologically speaking... most scientifically impossible things about this WILL become scientifically possible in our lifetime.

But that Telepathy chip WOULD spark a ton of content (e.g. XANA uses it to transmit/block messages... Yumi and Ulrich's thoughts become linked... how embarrasing... etc.)

Maybe in the hypothetical-next season of CL they'll need to use a pager service.
_______

But really... if this passes, it will be about one of the stupidest things France has ever passed...

Restricting Cell-Phone use in class... great idea.

Banning a student BY law for even possessing a cell-phone... what? do you live in the 60's or something? Please view the movie "Pirate Radio".
