I believe those individuals are trying to get away from reality and live, even if for a brief moment, their real fantasies - and achieve happiness; but once the fantasy is over, the nightmare of reality arrives yet again. I have to say, that does look pretty cool, though the one in the OP was closer in design to William's Zweihander than this one.

For the record-I simply pointed out a coincidence. Quite frankly I find cosplay a bit silly. And Cheez I know a guy who had one like that, it is cool.
