Character Study: Jeremie Belpois

Postby G-Force » Mon Nov 21, 2005 10:31 pm

After the positive feedback I got after my Aelita essay, I decided to post the next piece here. Enjoy.

There must be an unwritten law for television shows that there must be a tech head/genius that serves the side of good. One look at Jeremie, and you can guess in your sleep what role he’s going to fulfill in the show. Wearing his oval shaped glasses and blue turtleneck sweater, Jeremie does not appear to be the type who’s going to be winning any sports contests anytime soon but that’s ok as he has many other qualities that make up for this.

It is almost impossible for one to go through their school years and not encounter the snooty whiz kid who behaves in a manner like Mandark from Dexter’s Laboratory; showcasing a superior attitude and making you feel like the mental equivalent of a hamster. Jeremie does no such things. He is kind hearted and always willing to help his friends out and views his intelligence as just another part of him and does not flaunt it.

In a strange sense, one can view Jeremie as XANA’s most deadly foe. Such a comparison seems to be unwarranted due to his characterization on the show and his physical condition. He can’t destroy monsters on Lyoko like the others nor can he really fend off a possessed human being but one must look beyond these shortcomings to see Jeremie’s true strengths as a person. Jeremie alone is the deciding factor in the Lyoko group’s war with XANA With the right set of commands Aelita can be purged of her virus and the evil computer program can be shut down for good. This is where the real war is fought.

Sadly there are a few fans of the show who just see Jeremie as a computer geek and do not recognize his courage and determination. The fate of the world and Aelita’s existence on Earth rests on his shoulders as he has to race against the clock before XANA gets too strong to be contained. Jeremie spent countless nights and mornings toiling away at his computer for Aelita’s materialization program only to do so again for her anti-virus. XANA wishes to stop the young genius every which way he can and on many occasions has tried to end the boy’s life prematurely so that his power can go unchallenged. An average person would be reduced to a paranoid mental mess, more concerned with staying alive after coming so close to death so many times. However, Jeremie just sees these experiences as just yet another obstacle to overcome.

In Taoism, Jeremie represents the steel element; always determined and very stubborn when it comes to achieving one’s goal. Jeremie’s intentions for fighting XANA are indeed noble. No glory, power or riches can be obtained with his enemy’s destruction for himself. Much like Wesley from “The Princess Brideâ€

VERY GOOD!

I really like the referrences to Tao and to fairy tales. You also broght up some of the things I've been saything in the Aelita-essay thread about Jeremie as the "Strategist".

err, Isn't Jeremie technically now 13, as he had his birthday in Franz Hopper?

But otherwise, great!
What will you remember me for?

But 1 question how is it that jerimie turned 13 in 8th grade yet you are supose to turn 14 in 8th grade. If you day that it is becasue he skipped a grade , well becasue he is a genius there is only 1 down fall i found in that and here it is. If jerimie turns 13 in 8th grade that means he skipped a grade but that is no excuse for aelita who is a new student and is her first year aevery so there is no way she can skip a grade

A recent study shows that 92% of all teenagers moved on to rap, Put this in your profile if you're part of the 8% who stayed with rock

I'd have to say that, well, that's Jeremy. Good job, it's like poetry! Without.. the... uh... rhyming. And... without... the... rythm... nevermind.

NICE ONE G-FORCE! You explained exactly why Jeremy's my favorite character.

Jeremie doesn't have to be the only gifted child. From the dialog that usually takes place between Jeremie and Aelita, she's quite the little genius herself. Her little lecture in False Start should be proof enough for that. And remember, Jeremie setup her background, he can make her 12 and a grade skipper if he wants to.

If it came to a choice between the fate of the world and Aelita's existence, Jeremy would choose Aelita's existence without hesitation. It is a very good thing that Aelita would never allow that...

Anyone watching the show who does not recognize Jeremy's iron will needs to watch more closely. Anyone who does not recognize his heroism needs to watch "Image Problem" or "Deja Vu" again. He saved Yumi's life by attacking the YumiClone and he saved Aelita's by pulling her out of the swimming pool.

Yeah, I think it's pretty obvious that his love for Aelita is a higher priority than actually saving the world (not that he doesn't care about that too), and in fact there was that incident in "Just In Time".

And, not everyone starts school at the same age, so not everyone is the same age in 8th grade.
