Graphics programs used in CL

Postby kindpastor » Tue Dec 13, 2005 1:54 am

If this has already been asked in another forgive my n00bishness, but I wnated to know.

Does anybody know what graphics program is used for the 3D scenes in CL? I'm also interested in knowing what type of coloring program (I assume it is a program) is used to color the 2D animation.

to my knowledge, the question has not been specifically asked, but I believe you can find the answer to it in the XANADU thread. :]

i dont think anyone knows for certain as animation houses such as moonscopp tend to keep these things a secret from the general public. but if I was a betting man, I would say its either based off of 3d studio max (official price: $3,495), Maya (official price: $1,999), or something in house.

Note: prices above are approsimate and based off info from the official websites.

while searching for refrence images for my megatank, i came across this on http://code--lyoko.populus.ch/rub/35: (used translator, the site is in french)
The principal used software are software 3D such as 3DS Max, XSI SoftImage, or again software Maya.

nice find. and im not suprised one bit that they use motion capture for the characters. not only would it be difficult to animate all that movement by hand, but there have been a number of "clues" in the show to indicate some mocap was used (mainly, some jaggy movement by some of the characters).

seriously, id love to see a behind the scenes video showing the work that has been put into the 3d aspect of CL.

on another note in regards to the mocap: I wonder if they have separate "actors" that do the mocap, or if they allow the voice actors to do the mocap? while Im assuming its probably the first, I think it would add a totally different twist on things if they let the voice actor's do the mocap.

Man Maya is intense you get enough people and money on that thing you can make a FF movie. As for the the price tag *cough* bittorent *cough*--but seriously I'd have no idea how to use it.

my ex-boyfriend is an art major and he was taking a class about Maya while we dated. Majoring in art is very time-consuming. He would spend days at a time on campus, at times, in the Maya lab working on his projects. He had the keys to the building because he was the president of the animation club, so he and his classmates would stay up for days finishing their projects. If he got tired, he'd take the couch in the back room and nap a little. He was not fun to be around most times because of his lack of sleep. LOL

I saw the interface for Maya, and it looked very confusing. You can do animation with it as well as digital still art. Another program for digital still art is Bryce. Bryce is more for landscapes, but with the help of polygonal tools, can be useful for shapes like chairs and lamps. I've tooled around in Bryce and made some pretty cool-looking landscapes. :]

The Key animating is very easy, yet sophisticated in Maya. I have a lot of experience in Maya, its really cool. But confusing. And time consuming. And expensive.

I did read an ariticle saying that Antefilms, at the start of season2, stopped using Maya (as they were before in season 1) and also stopped using Motion Capture. It cost them to much money. They currently use only CGI animated sequences, maybe some old Motion capture animations, and now they use Softimage|XSI as the animator. The CGI characters were created by a company called OxiDoxi, and they used 3D's MAX.
I don't think the voice actors did any of the motion capture sequences.

Ah, Maya is very cool. It is very easy to animate something very simple like a stick figure and somewhat easy to animate a simple model. It does get more complex when you start to build full model with figures and limbs.

Does anyone know how long it takes to finish an episode of Code Lyoko normally?

maya is a $2000 3d animating and modleing program desingned for making movies and other films. It's widly used by many companys and was used by Antefilms, the makers of code lyoko, in season 1. You can get a full personal learning version (a student version where you can't actually render I might say) for free download with all of the full qualitys for free on their site. Overall it rocks.
